cd: I too remembered Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh after logging off last night. And speaking of the Brits, my startup list (page 1) mentions an artist named Judee Sill. She too was from the UK, and her Lady-O recording, though successful in the kingdom, earned little airplay in the states. Presumably a tribute to Jacguie Kennedy Onassis, it's a painfully beautiful number, sung in Fuge style, and engineered with over-dubbed vocals not yet common in 1971. Available today on YouTube.

Lover's Concerto by the Toys, adapted from Bach , If I remember correctly.

I heard a classical piece on the radio, and was told that it was called "Air on the G String" by Bach. To me it has the feel of Procol Harum's "Whiter Shade of Pale," -- actually vice versa.

Wikipedia (FWIW) comes across as to doubt this. YMMV....

We've danced all around this one but I don't think anybody's mentioned it: Classical Gas by Mason Williams.

Some of these are more pop than rock, and I'm not sure if this thread is supposed to be for songs actually based on classical pieces, but these seem to have a classical flavor...

"Conquistador" Procol Harum
"Living In The Past" Jethro Tull
"A Song Of Joy" Miguel Rios
"Tuesday Afternoon" and "Nights In White Satin" Moody Blues
"Dust In The Wind" Kansas
"2001 (Also Sprach Zarathustra)" Deodato
"Could It Be Magic" Barry Manilow
"Tubular Bells" Mike Oldfield

Oooooooooops the toys and bach were alredy mentioned on the first page..lets see what am I going to do for an entry,oh yes, my man Jimmy Webb

McArhur Park-Richard Harris .....
