Great songs no longer heard on Oldies radio

D

Guest
I heard XM or Sirius on a flight the other day. Man, was I blown away by the great tunes you almost never hear anymore on "oldies" radio.

A few examples of great songs that should be played regularly:

-She's A Bout A Mover - Sir Douglas Quintet (1965?)
-Have I The Right - Honeycombs WHERE DID THAT GREAT ONE GO??
-Just Like Romeo & Juliet
-Ode To Billy Joe
-Ring of Fire
-I Walk The Line

-Absolutely Right - Five Man Eletrical Band

-CTUALLY, I HEARD THAT ON A SATELLITE-FED SMALL-TIME AM OLDIES STATION. WAS BLOWN AWAY. THE JOCK MUST HAVE SNUCK THAT ONE IN. I'D NEVER HEARD IT ON THE SO-CALLED "HERITAGE" OLDIES STATION 'ROUND HERE!

-Come Back When YOu Grow Up - Bobby Vee (1967)

-Ronnie- Four Seasons

-I've Got You Under My Skin - Four Seasons

-Dawn - Four Seasons

-Rag Doll - Four Seasons

-C'Mon Marianne - Four Seasons.

There are so many others I can't think of. Have to look at my Billboard Top 40 book to remember many of them. Sad to think they've been "tested" off of the radio.

One that makes me want to turn up the radio (OR MUSIC CHOICE now) is
RUNAWAY, by Del Shannon (1961), one of the greatest rock and roll songs of all time.

I get the same feeling with WALK LIKE A MAN (1963- what a great year that was for rock and roll) RAG DOLL (1964), LET"S HANG ON (1965), I GET AROUND (1964), CALIFORNIA GIRLS ('65- heard very often on oldies radio, thankfully), and GOOD VIBRATIONS as well as HEY JUDE, SHE LOVES YOU, JAILHOUSE ROCK, MACK THE KNIFE, WHAT I'D SAY, THE WANDERER.

Interesting for a guy who's only 43. These aren't s'pposed to be my oldies. I'm s'possed to like the disco era and the late 70s.

Amen. The fact that songs like you mentioned "tested" off the radio is the reason "oldies" (as presented on most current oldies stations) has less appeal to me than it used to. Nowadays the short oldies playlist dominates.

I'm close to your age. Like you, I'll feast quite happily on a diet of late 50's through early/mid-60's hits. Even though I'm into 70's music, too (early moreso than late 70's).

Here's some good ones:

Murmaids - Popsicles & Icicles
The Toys - A Lovers Concerto
Peter & Gordon - I Go To Pieces
Tommy Roe - Sheila
Gene Pitney - Town Without Pity
Turtles - It Ain't Me Babe
Yardbirds - For Your Love
Detergents - Leader Of The Laundromat
Shangri Las - Leader Of The Pack
Jimmy Clanton - Venus In Blue Jeans
The Fleetwoods - Mr. Blue
Marianne Faithful - As Tears Go By
Oliver - Jean
Barbara Lynn - You'll Lose A Good Thing
Ventures - Walk Don't Run '64
Sam Cooke - Cupid
Randy & The Rainbows - Denise
Sand Pipers - Guantanamera
Frankie Avalon - Venus & Why
Hondells - Little Honda
Skeeter Davis - The End Of The World
Honeycombs - Have I The Right (As you said. When I heard it for the first time on the radio in years on WZZN "True Oldies Channel" back in September I started to cry because I couldn't believe I was hearing it again)
Dell Shannon - Runaway (I miss this song. It reminds me of staying up all night listening to WJMK Chicago when I was in 3rd grade)
Dave Clark Five - Over & Over
Eddie Cochrane - Summertime Blues
Gary Lewis & The Playboys - Everybody Loves A Clown

I'm only 18, but I grew up listening to this music (Late 50s-Early 70s) oldies. My mom is 46 years old and she doesn't like it. I just listened at my own will. It means a lot to me.

as for WZZN/True Oldies Channel http://www.yes.com/lookup.php?s=WZZN

Check them out on Yes. I could listen to this station all day/night.<P ID="signature">______________

Many oldies stations (like WODS in Boston, though they're currently all
ho-ho-ho at the moment) stick to post-1964 stuff, and even then they don't
play everything. Narrow playlists. (Though in WODS' case they have the Lost
45s show which does play the "ignored" songs).

They can take an artist like Elvis or the Turtles and restrict them to just
3-4 songs, when there were tons of other ignored hits.

"WOLD"--Harry Chapin. I like that tune but maybe DJs find the image of
the wandering jock a bit of a downer? "That's how this business goes" :)

probably many more I could think of.

I could also see them playing live or alternate versions of songs--and again,
some may. WODS has a Beatles at 10 pm feature and once in awhile they'll
dig out alternate versions of certain songs from the Anthology albums.

But anyway, narrow playlists. On some but not all oldies stations.<P ID="signature">______________

Another song that barely gets played is "Like A Rolling Stone"
by Bob Dylan although I have heard it a few times on WORC-FM,
in Worcester, MA. (Except for Lay Lady Lay it seems there's really not much Dylan on oldies radio at all). You'd like to think that a ground-breaking
classic such as L.A.R.S. would still qualify for airplay on an oldies
station and not just occasionally on classic rock stations.

Hmmm I think we play all of these. might actually be wrong
on one or two but I dont think so.

Everything but Absolutely Right-Five Man Electical Band. And you are right.

I happen to be listening to SundayOldiesJukebox.com right now. Patience And Prudence is on. A song banned from oldies since about 1995.

Sunday Oldies Jukebox has close to the range of music that WCBS-FM carried in the early eighties (though with less from the seventies and little doo wop). But they are a fine station to listen to, especially when I want familiar oldies on, but songs that I am not ready to puke over from getting worn out. And I can get more seventies elsewhere, so that is good too. Two seventies an hour is fine with me.

They are a good station to listen to when I play my computer pinball machine. If I lived in the area, I would be interested in doing a show, because playing this music really would appeal to me. Unlike the obscure rock and roll, which I love, I would not have to learn where the vocals start in these songs.

Just a guess...Hey Jude, Like A Rolling Stone and MacArthur Park are too long and cut into commercial time. Would do you think?

Hey, thanks for the heads-up on this station. I listened last night and tonight - what a terrific selection. Some B-sides and lesser heard versions. Oldies, some doo-wop, a little folksy chat. A nice discovery. Is it just my computer, or are there little clicks on the webcast (not from the records)?

While we're telling our favories, does anybody remember Angela Jones by Johnny Ferguson 1960, and Shy Away by Jerry Fuller (and the B-side, Heavenly), and Shortnin' Bread by Paul Chaplain? All classics that are never aired.

I spun MacArthur Park on Friday night, what a long damn song.7 and some change....I wonder how many I lost(listeners)in that time span......

And "who left the cake out in the rain?" whats that all about???

Glenn Miller was great. For those who have never listened to his music, they are missing a fabulous entertainer. I have his greatest hits CD in my Jeep. His accomplishments as a musician were awesome. BTW, he was the first musician, I believe, to be awarded a gold record.

That's because you're looking in the wrong place. you need
to findd a big band station. try WKHR on live365 if nothing
else.
I love that song and I love Glenn Miller. the music is still
great.

I agree with Klunk and Mike!!
However, I enjoyed Ernie Fields' version of ITM just as well.
And you two guys do realize gr8oldies was injecting a bit of sarcasm, right?

Well I don't know about listeners, but a lot of DJ's loved
that song until automation came along.

What about In The Mood by Ernie Fields?
Or

In The Mood by Henhouse Plus Five? (Ray Stevens)

That is rock and roll.
