Great Stuff on WKCR tonight

I used to record "The Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito" show and listen to it on my walkman when I was on the train to school in the morning.

I'm rarely up this late nowadays, but I managed to catch an overnight show on 89.9 WKCR tonight before I came in, and it is fantastic!

Stretch & Bobbito were great to listen to, and they were one of the greatest cumulative voices of underground, honest, east coast hip-hop. I won't attempt to spell any names, but the two hosts tonight bring that same spirit, and also happen to be very funny. They joked about R. Kelly (his MUSIC), Akon and T. Pain (their MUSIC), which is not something the two hip-hop giants in NYC would do, or at least I haven't heard it.

They were playing demos, unsigned artists and speaking freely. At least for tonight, I can say that there still is a chance to find terrestrial radio that is cutting edge, free-form and exciting.

Interestingly, Stretch & Bobbito used to do Sunday nights/Monday mornings for a couple hours on one of said hip-hop giants in NYC, Hot 97. Late, late 90's, I wanna say.

Yes, you are correct, they did end up on Hot 97 later on. My airchecking days however actually took place in the late '80's to the early '90's. The HOT show was a neutered version of the raw show they originally ran.

I remember being very excited about the two appearing on Hot97, then disappointed when the product was eviscerated. On their WKCR show, they used to premiere artist after artist, and that was from a time when the East Coast was producing every star outside of NWA and Hammer.

They introduced me to the "Liquid Lounge", and I can remember when they were extolling the music of some unknown MC named Biggie Smalls...those days were a lot of fun!

Hmmm, I haven't listened to WKCR late on Thursday nights/early Friday mornings in a long time. Good to know they're still doing an underground and independent hip-hop show at that time. You might also want to check out http://www.wfmu.org/playlists/NU"]Coffee Break for Heroes & Villains (Thu 11 p.m. to 2 a.m.) and http://www.wfmu.org/playlists/BJ"]Put the Needle on the Record (Fri 3 p.m to 6 p.m.) on WFMU (91.1).

Hmmm, I just realized that Coffee Break's new timeslot overlaps with the WKCR show for an hour. Oh well, once the summer is over, Coffee Break will probably get bounced around the schedule again to a different night.

Overall, WKCR is a pretty good station, if a little dry. Their jazz is a lot better than WBGO's. And they have a really good Indian classical show on Sunday evenings. And Tony Coulter spins some of the weirdest and greatest avant-garde and experimental stuff around, every other Wed. from 3 to 6 p.m.
