Well some of us really do love 'RKO (at least when it comes to Howie, etc.;
I also listen to 'TKK for Ingraham and Hannity and even a bit of Severin).
If 'RKO became the AAR affiliate, would such talk here continue? My fave
bits here are the folks who talk about how the station is losing listeners
left and right despite the fact that they are currently the highest rated
all-talk station in town. If that's failure, Entercom's gotta be pretty
happy. (And yes, it WOULD be nice for them to have more local talent on
weekends, and I joined in that sentiment elsewhere, but they do have
stuff like Pundit Review...)<P ID="signature">______________

We don't hate WKRO. At least I don't. I like it, which is why I don't want to see them run it into the ground with bad programming decisions.

Idle speculation

And you have evidence of this idle speculation?

Re: Is this the "Bash WRKO" board now?

First, I don't know who "you guys" are. And second, I guess you could say I do love WRKO. That's what makes this radical change in 7 day commitment so disappointing. This is from my August post:

While many of us have fond memories of the Dean and Gene, I really have to commend the team that has run the Talk Station for the past few years. I believe they have really begun to turn things around.

I also can't believe any of the complaints about any of the weekend shows. I actually enjoy Spencer's show very much. But, even if you don't, do you want to return to the Liberty Travel Show? Weekends now provide almost a record level of live & local shows compared to brokered time, reruns of Dr. Dean Edell or other shows it didn't run in their weekday slots and "Best of" shows of many of the years gone by. The immediate prior management seemed to just shut down on Saturdays and Sundays. This team brought us 3 local shows on Satuday mornings, a couple of money shows then more local talk into Saturday evening. Then a Sunday with a good portion of the programs being live. Thank you.

Thanks also for increasing the hours of live and local newscasts. This too is a vast improvement.

Please don't assume because I post on a subject that makes me one of "You guys". Personally, I enjoy this board and I'm tired of "you guys" who question every post's value. Why discourage an active board? I know nothing about transmitters or directional signals or whether MIKE pitches it's music. But, I know what I like to hear on radio ... and reruns of what I heard earlier in the week ain't it.

Borrowing from the great Andy Rooney "Why is it if you only listened to two hours of Howie during the week, those are the same 2 they replay over the weekend?"

Re: Is this the "Bash WRKO" board now?

I think that the problem people have with WRKO is that it's a station that has fallen so far.

In the 80's it was easily the best talk station in Boston and was probably also the best talk station in the Nation. The station had top notch talk hosts and took on important issues. It was a counter balance to the one party state government and actually was a major player in the politics of this state.

When you listened to the station, you learned something. With Jerry Williams it was probably about a local issue that needed attention and with Gene Burns it was more likely about a national or international news story. The hosts often interviewed guests that really knew something about what they were talking about and this helped to fill in for the weak spots of the hosts.

Now what do we have?

On WRKO the premiere host is Howie Carr. He's knowledgeable about a lot of thinks, but seems to want to take the easy way out be dealing mostly with pop culture garbage. If he interviews someone theres a good chance the person will be old fart from TV Land promoting some crappy convention appearance that they will be making. How sad is that?

Most of the other hosts on RKO aren't even worth mentioning, except to say it's more of the same only the light weight version.

The other major talk station isn't much better, but I'll save that for another time.

I also agree with the previous poster. It's really annoying that whenever a conversation gets going here, someone (usually a moderator) gets annoyed by it. This is a board to talk about radio. If people are jumping on a subject it shows that it means something to them and it's worthy of talking about. If your so afraid that you'll get sued because the station or person of the discussion might be offended, then you should take your toys and go play in some other sand box. If you can't talk about radio on the radio board without fear of censorship, then you might as well shut it down or turn it into something else.

Re: Is this the "Bash WRKO" board now?

All you say is true about WRKO and Entercom. If the moderators think writing the truth is bashing then this discussion board is worthless.

WRKO and talk radio in general has become a vast wasteland of one sided propaganda. All that has made the format Boring and Predictable.

Still think WRKO is for sale.

Re: Is this the "Bash WRKO" board now?

It's sad to see a once-great station like RKO fade to what it now is. The station was really something at one point. It hurts the market when one of the top signals underperforms like this.
