Greater Media

Greater Media recently put "Good Time Oldies" on WCTC AM New Brunswick, who would be a candidate in Philly for that format? Philly sure could use a "True" oldies station.

So would Mr. Tozzi.

Besides, can a competing oldies station even make a considerable dent into 'OGL's ratings? Rimshotter WVLT isn't even showing up on the radar!

And keep in mind that the "Good Time Oldies" birdfeed format from Dial Global (nee Jones) is specifically designed for middle- to small-market areas, which WCTC and WMTR serve. A Class A signal running an automated "Good Time Oldies" format would get absolutely clobbered by 'OGL in the PPM's.

mabye 950 and move espn radio to 97.5 ??

i would hate to see JJZ get the axe though

Isn't "true oldies" where 950 flipped from?

I can't figure out why any company would put a talk format on FM and a music format on AM. I get talk formats on FM, but not from the same company that puts music on AM.

Are there any markets where a 70s-80s oldies station and a 50s-60s oldies station are both on the air and doing well?

Sorta. They were a local oldies station for about a year until the flip to sports three falls ago.

And besides, just as talk radio has been a boon to the AM band, it will eventually save the FM band while the AM band is on life support. Sean Hannity said so...

Oh, I agree that we'll be hearing more talk programming on FM in the future, as there are so many better ways than FM radio to get music now. What I don't think is that we'll be seeing a return to music programming on AM stations owned by companies who put talk on FM stations in the same market. That simply makes no sense to do.

I think GM has been toying with the idea of oldies on the 97.5 signal, they were going to do it, then CC killed Jazz and they tried to fill the dying SJ hole. If they put a good oldies format on, in fact anything playing a broad variety of oldies they will kill OGL, they rule the roost just because there is no GOOD competition. Lets see come Labor Day if oldies are not the menu on 97.5...You should all remember when rimshot 94.5 was oldies they were hurting OGL, look back at the ratings years back....

When 97.5 started out, they had a GREAT format with the Motown/rock oldies format "Jammin' 97.5" if I remember correctly, but the suits killed that one off. Its time for a REAL oldies station in Philly! Now whos got the guts to do it and do it right? Thank god for the internet!

You think what we need in a competitor to WOGL is a station that plays more Motown?

The WCTC move is far different than the situation in Philadelphia.

WCTC is a medium market station that was attempting to beat the big guns from NYC. You need talent that is just as big, but the pay is minimal. You cannot attract and keep top notch talent that way.

While parts of the Middlesex market receives WCBS-FM loud and clear, much of the market cannot hear either that station or WOGL. So oldies could give them a shot. At least it is cheaper than N/T.

WPEN never put a dent in WOGL's audience. Another oldies station here, AM or FM, is not going to make a difference.

BTW, the Jammin' format was on 95.7, in between "Max" and "Mix".

97.5 was CHR WPST and 94.5 was oldies before it flipped to classic rock as The Hawk. Then later, Nassau swapped the formats of 94.5 and 97.5, and then 97.5 was sold to Greater Media, who flipped it to Smooth Jazz.

You can get WCBS fine in New Brunswick, and even a trace of WOGL. If Magic 98.3 didn't exist, WOGL would come in well.

Sorry, but a pop of nearly 1.4 million in market # 38? I wouldn't call that medium market. That's bigger than Indianapolis, Nashville, Memphis, Louisville and more. Even with 1kw, it covers most of it.

Adnd 950 had it's chance, a good chance, with Jim Nettleton at the helm, but held him back and interfered with programming. Also they did not cover the metro well at that time, and their audio was TERRIBLE sounding. It sounded like distorted mud with a blanket over the speaker. The sacrifice of 99.8% of it's potential audience for .02% listening on IBOC? Icing...infomercials all weekend.
