Greater Media's WMMR and WMGK

Scanning the dial this morning, I listened to WMMR for a while. This station has updated and made many changes to its imaging and playlist over the years. The listener can hear Led Zeppelin or Rolling Stones followed by Stone Temple Pilots or Muse. Add that to Pierre's vinyl (if he still does that) and the result is an interesting, creative, and unpredictable radio station IMHO. Kudos to Greater Media.

That said, why the hell is WMGK, also owned by Greater Media, so boring and bland? I don't think they've changed their playlist in ten years. If they have, it doesn't sound like they've added to it. If anything, it sounds like they've deleted tracks from their rotation. I used to think the worst station in Philly was a cross between WOGL and WMGK because of their predictability and unimaginative playlists. But at least WOGL changes it up every once in a while by deleting certain tunes and adding new ones. (Please don't make this another thread about 50's and 60's oldies).

Any thoughts? Are they protecting each other from competing with each other? Or is there another reason that WMMR has changed over the years and Philly's "classic rock" station has hardly made any changes at all in ten years?

It's exactly what you say. They are trying to be different from each other. One is your average classic rock station, and one is a local heritage icon. There are people who like one and other people who like the other.

That said, I'm wondering whether it might have been a good idea at this point in his career to move Pierre Robert over to MGK.

That's fine. WMMR covers three generations while WMGK only covers the classic rock generation. So why is one station above average (IMHO) in delivery, playlist, and presentation while the other station is boring and predictable. If WMGK wishes to focus on "classic rock" only, they could hold themselves to WMMR's standards by offering a bigger variety of "classic rock" tunes without alienating their audience.

Unless WMGK only exists to fill a space on the dial, a talented music director(s) should be able to get the job done without having the two stations compete against each other.

I never thought I would say that Philly would have a station more boring, repetitive, and predictable than WOGL. But this appears to be the case with WMGK.

Because bland and repetitive (especially repetitive) gets ratings. So they have one station that does that, and one that does music radio the way we all, on this board, think it should be done.

We should consider ourselves lucky that they run one music station like that. It's one more than most companies in the market run.

Perhaps you're correct. Although I think it's sad that in this town there seems to be more variety on our local CHR stations than on our "Classic Rock" station.
