The vocal intro to "Will You Be Staying After Sunday?", by The Peppermint Rainbow
Ol' 55 - The Eagles

"The Choking Kind" by Joe Simon--another good rolling base intro. (love those base intros ;D)

:D

The violins intro to The Vogues cover of "My Special Angel"
Three Dog Night - Joy to The World
Strawberry Alarm Clock - Incense & Peppermints

One chord - "A Hard Day's Night" - The Beatles

I was thinking of that one you beat me to it.

Sunshine of your love - Cream
Light My Fire - Doors
Hello I Love You - Doors
House Of the Rising Sun - Animals
We gotta get Outa This Place - Animals
Boom Boom - Animals
(single version of)"Slippin' into Darkness" - War

How about this:

Bernadette - The Four Tops
Stuck In The Middle - Stealers Wheel

One has a heavier beat, one has a more mellow sound; still sounds the same.

How about the fast paced piano opening on Fats Domino's "Whole Lotta Lovin?

Earlier in this thread, I mentioned a couple of great ones with no intro. Another great one in that category would have to be "Can't Buy Me Love" by the Beatles.

And for one from the other extreme, check out the live version of Bob Seger's "Old Time Rock & Roll." It starts out with an approximately minute long jam session, and the audience is enjoying it and clapping along, but it is clear that they have no idea what they are about to hear. When Seger launches into "just take those old records off the shelf," the audience roars with applause! 8) I've always enjoyed the way he snuck that one in on them! 8)

Here are a few that no one mentioned so far

Save it For Me - Four Seasons
It Hurts To Be In Love - Gene Pitney
Town Without Pity - Gene Pitney
Where Did Our Love Go - Supremes
I Feel Fine - Beatles

You are absolutely right, I had forgotten about this great performance - thanks for the memory.

The first three here are in my top 5 with the remainder being honorable mention.

“Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress” the Hollies * The strong bass line gives me chills.
“Teach Your Children Well” CSN&Y * The emotion that Garcia puts into the steel ride is exceptional.
“Fairy Tale” the Pointer Sisters * Another great steel guitar intro.

“Susie Q” Dale Hawkins
“Hula Love” Buddy Knox
“Sweet Nothins” Brenda Lee (Vocal intro - "Uh huh, honey...all right"
“Do You Wanna Dance” Bobby Freeman
“Angel From Montgomery” Bonnie Rait
“Bang A Gong” (Get It On) T. Rex
“Cherry Pink in Apple Blossom Time” Perez Prado
“Where Or When” Dion and Belmonts
“Ramrod” Duane Eddy
“Devoted To You” Everly Brothers
“High Heel Sneakers” John Lee Hooker
“Baby Talk” Jan & Dean
“For Your Precious Love” Jerry Butler
“The Fool” Sanford Clark
“It Was I” Skip & Flip
“Short Shorts” the Royal Teens

Don't forget "Locomotion" by Little Eva, or the Raspberries' "I Wanna Be With You" (both very similar).
"Satisfaction" is right up there on my list too.

Hate to keep busting in here, but I forgot to include the #4 intro on my top 5 list:

"Matchbox" Carl Perkins with the Mavericks (Duane Eddy) long version

I am glad to see you mention this cut...Raul Malo and Carl Perkins together created a Rock N Roll masterpiece with this remake for the Aids CD.........Along with the Derailers, the mavericks are the two most underrated country bands today, shame on you programmers for not playing these two bands.

"Satisfaction" does have a great opening.
