Greek public broadcaster ERT - pulled off the air.

Wowzers. I was listening to them earlier this evening (ERA5) when their shortwave broadcaster closed out much earlier than usual. Now I'm reading that the plug has been pulled on the entire public broadcast system.

EDIT: Their official web page, is streaming the protests in front of the ERT headquarters ~> http://www.ert.gr/

The url leads nowhere. I guess they turned off the internet broadcast also.

Editorial: I've never understood the need for partially or wholly funded public broadcasts aimed at in-country consumption. Tax funded international broadcasting, that I can understand.

The foundations for US public broadcasting came in the early 60s when FCC Chairman Newton Minnow refered to commercial TV as a "vast wasteland." Commercial broadcasters at the time didn't want to devote time to education, the arts, or serious public affairs. Not much has changed. But certainly the Voice of America does a great job presenting American culture to the world. Too bad so little of it gets heard internally.

The ERT site is still down, to the best of my knowledge ERT is still shut down, with a new service NERIT starting up in August. However...I'm hearing Greek music again on 9420 kHz. Not sure (yet) whether it's ERA5 or if it's the regional broadcaster from (Greek) Macedonia. Apparently, the regional ERT TV channel in Macedonia is still operational...

On another forum I read that a Greek court ordered the stations back on the air. I've been hearing some audio on 9420 lately but not strong enough to ID it as Greece.
