Green Bay, WI Quick Bandscan Part 2.

Not exactly Green Bay last night, but Oshkosh....40 miles south-southwest, and conditions quite a bit different than two weeks ago.

SRF 37 walkman/hotel room/pre-dawn today/no significant atmospheric or internally generated noise. I'll essentially limit my comments to new developments....

540: CBK completely trashing WAUK. WAUK had been alone two weeks ago.
560: WIND getting trashed by sports talk. I presume WEBC, but didn't get an ID
590: WKZO: Haven't heard this one at night anywhere for quite a while
630: CFCO: Monster signal blasting through WTMJ iboc.
640: WOI alone. It's also been a while since I've heard this one anywhere outside of Iowa.
660: WFAN strong
670: Cuba under WOR
710: WOR with "Cuban Chorus" underneath
730: CKDO: Stronger than WGN next door
820: CHAM winning the battle with WBAP
850: KOA strong
860: CJBC even stronger
880: CKLQ blowing out WCBS. Basically all alone
910: WSUI strong
920: No trace of WOKY, which had been almost alone two weeks ago
990: CBW fair under WMVP splatter
1030: WBZ with a monster signal...iboc covering up KDKA (completely) and WHO (partly)
1050: CKSB easily audible under semi-local Catholic station
1100: WTAM blasting
1170: KJOC fair. This one puts a good signal into western Wisconsin....but there they were in the northeast.
1190: WOWO-weak, but alone. Almost like the "good old days"
1290: WIRL-fair. I was able to null WNAM five miles away.
1300: WOOD-fair/poor. It was stronger last time.
1390: WGRB-fair. 5kw from the south side of Chicago aimed right up the lake Michigan shore.
1470: WMBD-very strong. Almost like a local with minimal fading. Blasting through local 1490 splatter. No escaping these guys!

Good to hear that CFCO was cutting thru WTMJs IBOC. No chance of that happening here in Chicagoland.

I wasn't surprised that CFCO was strong enough to cut through WTMJ's IBOC. WTMJ is easily nulled where I was. What was surprising is that CFCO was stronger than WTMJ. I had 10kw of WTMJ aimed right at me in an area with great ground conductivity! I thought I was a little too close to WTMJ's transmitter site for convergence, but that's the only explanation I can think of.

I've always loved the WSUI call letters for an Iowa station.

After all, Iowa is known for pork and the call letters scream "sooie", the traditional hog call.

Fits right in in a state where hogs outnumber people. But of course, the people are some of the nicest you'll find anywhere!

ftballfan, try 670, 710, 1180, 570. Four best frequencies for Cuba. 570 is Radio Reloj (with that RR CW code) and 670/710/1180 are mainly Rebelde repeaters. Get a SW radio and // 5.025 khz for the last three. Match = Cuba!

I can get Cuba on 670 in Boise under KBOI!
710 almost always has the Cuban echo on it.

Just listen to 670 at night with your radio/antenna aimed toward Cuba and you'll hear it underneath WSCR. Sometimes maybe mixing in with WSCR.

Excellent suggestions. I'd add 640 and 690 as good bets. R. Reloj is easy enough to pick out of the noise and identify with the code and the clock ticks. You can also try for Reloj on 790, 870, and 950. I've caught them here in the Chicago area under WWL. Another one to try is R. Enciclopedia on 530. If you hear "elevator music" and a female announcer, you've got Cuba. (Anything else and you've almost certainly got CIAO.)

Except here, where 530 is a faint TIS jumble! In all my years of DX I have yet to hear Radio Enciclopedia on 530 kHz.

My guess is that you'll eventually snag it....especially given your successes with trans-Pacific and other long distance DX. It's fairly regular here northwest of Chicago. Usually weak, but not much on the channel to stop it unless you're too close to one of those TIS pests. The elevator music and the female announcers definitely make the task of identifying easier.

At my location in near north Chicagoland I used to hear the Canadian on 530. Haven't heard Cuba, but haven't tried lately either.

530 late nights is about six different weak carriers - probably all or close to all TIS stations. Unfortunately my box loop's variable capacitor only goes down to about 620 kHz - I'd have to get 100 pf MORE to get down to 530 and try to copy some distant TIS stations...and maybe Cuba.

boiseengineer - first of all I've received 670 and 1180 from Cuba, both once. Also, I've picked up an UNID 890 the last couple nights with SS romantica and salsa/tropical music. Is KYWN back on or is this Progreso in Cuba? I've even picked up at 6AM when Cuba should NOT be in on AM at that hour (way past sunrise number 1, and number 2 most conditions are to the west toward the Pacific)
