Greenville and Indianola stations sold

It "WAS", Repeat "WAS" the Classic "American Grafitti Type Town", big in the 50's
and the 60's because the Air Base was a Jet Training Base for pilots. That
brought a lot of people from all over USA to the Delta. Other industry kept
the economy hoppin, that kept radio sales up and busy, and stations sounding
fairly decent, with WLS at 890 replacing DDT at 990 at Sundown, that
helped DDT with some kinda cred, and GVM not a bad country station,
JPR decent too.
"Joe Strazis" downtown to "Dans B-b-q" on Hiway 82 was "The Loop".
High School football games would see up to 2,000 or 3,000 show up, a
real "Big Deal"; Greenville-Greenwood Game at either town at Thnksgivin
a Real Big Deal. Lake Ferg, was packed in the summer at the sandbars
with rafts and ski boats, either there are at the Yacht Club, love it the
Yacht Club...LOL.
70s & 80s not bad, G-ville hit the 90s and the slide started, till now.
And Now! Fellow Babys...."It's No-Where Man!"

-Dr. T: Many a Jar of Rebel Yell went out of that place for Ole Missed it & Bully U Games, Uh-Huh!

-JBoyd: Mmmm-a Big Ole Slice of Lemon Ice Box Pie and a Sweeeet Tea at
Browns, nothing better. -Fellow Babys

Regarding large airplanes at Greenville Airport...They are there to be painted. One of the airport's largest, and a highly skilled employer's, is a paint company that operates from 2 or 3 of the large hangars on the North side of the field. I know at least 2 major airlines use the facilities for painting planes.

As for the rest of G'ville...as my saying goes, "The boom times dried up a long time ago and now we're a hundred miles down the road..."

I listened to WIQQ some while attending Delta State, and also when I could recieve the signal some 40 miles North of G'Ville. The studios, as I recall where located in a burned out shopping center on the Southeast corner of Hwy 82 and State Road 1.
Mostly satellite jocks, a live morning and afternoon show, the afternoon show needed work...Still it did offer at Hot AC outlet after everything else in the area playing Hot AC went down different format roads.

> the afternoon show needed work...

Actually, the afternoon show needed to be shot and put out of its misery.

Speaking of radio in the Delta, what`s Charlie Ross up to these days? I never understood why someone with his talent stuck around that area.

Thanks Larry. I`ll have to give him a shout. On a side note, we were in Memphis this past March and drove down to Greenville. I didn`t think things could get any worse after 14 years, but they did. Very sad.

I was in the Delta and had a chance to listen to (the new) Q102.3. Still hot AC, but sounds as if they've been taken off satellite. Even heard fresh new jingles for the first time in ages. Seems like Debut actually gives a damn about how to run a station. Granted, I didn't listen much, but I was encouraged by what I heard.

As a matter of fact they did. Just look out for the AM to flip to news/talk in the coming weeks....or so I've been told.

When I listened, all I heard were liners and songs, no jocks. Is that really better than satellite?

But at least I didn't hear Margaret doing any 20-minute remote breaks!

Charlie was talking between every song and into sets. His delivery was good but very few station IDs. I geuss in Greenville that's not that important. Especially since there's no Delta Country. Who else are you going to listen to?

I give Charlie his props of his professionalism on air. He really knows how to work the wake-ups really well. He's truly a class act in his own way.

I worked with Charlie at both WXVT TV15 and at KUUZ. Why he stays in the Delta is beyond me. One of the better people I worked with in broadcasting.

Charlie was at his finest doing mornings on STAR-103 (KZYQ). He left right after I sold the station. He once said that he worked for me longer than he had stayed with several of his wives.

I Remember working at WIQQ back in the early 90's.. Actually I worked at WKZB in Drew back when it was Hot Country Z95.3.. Ran by Eddie Bond who was really a legend in his own mind... Nothing like living in a cotton field next to the small studio and transmitter. But back to WIQQ. When I worked there it was called "Live Radio Q102". I did the evening 6pm-12mid shift for about a year. It was interesting putting people on the air as you had to record them in the production room onto cart, then rush back into the studio to play them back. I will say for all the radio stations I worked at, WIQQ was the most fun since they did not sell night time ads and I was pretty much free to play what I wanted. It was Larry in the Morning, Can't remember the Midday person, Brent in the Box afternoons and myself in the evenings. We signed off at Midnight except on the weekends when we were 24 hours.. The setup for WNIX was a nice collection of Reel to Reel tapes, Satellite and Carts. We were supposed to change the host ID carts at specific times. Although we often forgot to change them out and you would hear the wrong person saying "The Big Bopper WNIX" What fun LOL...
