Greenville Ratings

Hey Entercom...

Nice job with WGVC. Now it's just slightly below WRIX. Somebody show them the "off" button on the transmitter.

Wow, looking at the ratings release today on radioandrecords.com, I don't even see WGVC listed.

Does this mean they didn't even make the ratings? That's TERRIBLE.

I just see the 12+, but..

LOL! I don't even SEE WGVC 12+. Beautiful, Entercom, just BEAUTIFUL. The decision to drop the Oldies format in the first place was just stupid. Downright stupid. I really don't see a format for them unless they tried Classic Hits with more of an Oldies base (so it wouldnt hurt WROQ) or Sportstalk, which they probably wouldn't try. It's pretty apparent this thing isn't working. Wonder how much longer they'll keep the format.

I don't recall a commercial Greenville FM with a signal that covered the whole area not making the 12+ book (not the 103s, WCCP, WRIX, etc).

The Buzzard is the lowest it's been in a long time. It has seemed to dangle by a string for ages now...maybe CC should try FM talk there?

You would have thought that since their ratings have hit the skids ever since they dumped the oldies format, they would have gone back to their cash cow which worked really well for them, but unless someone really gets ahold of someone in management, I don't really see that happening any time soon and that is a real shame.

All I can is OUCH!!! And the bone headed move of the year so far goes to ENTERCOM... Since GVC did not show up in the 12+ did they even make any bonus points in 18-34 or 25-54... If they are as bad as it seems it may be time to pull the plug on this puppy and go back to the drawing board... Heck their version of Jack, Mike, Simon or Charlie would do better and would not hurt there other stations too bad... JMO... CC1

I guess they were simply following the trend. Oldies stations were dropping left and right like flies in 2005. The trend is over now, and some that flipped then have actually returned to the format, WKAZ/Charleston WV and WGCO/Savannah GA come to mind. How are the 25-54s, particularly Women, their target? Any ideas what formats should be tried next? They should go back to playing Oldies, or at least a watered-down Classic Hits..

Maybe it's time to do what I've advocated for some time now:

Move the WORD simulcast to 106.3, and leave the AM twins to do sports talk.

You are right that they followed the other radio lemmings over the cliff when they dumped oldies. All that stuff about "old demos". It's true that it's tough to sell to the equally lemminglike agencies, but you can still sell more local direct advertising on an Oldies station than you can with the two format options Entercom picked. First Country/Christian, now chick talk. Heck, they got their butts kicked by Davidson with the same stations Entercom sold to them, WOLI/WOLT. Even Bob Jones does better than WGVC.

Entercom will never, ever admit they were wrong and go back to Oldies. Best guess is Jack.

I would bet $100 that the morons at Entercom STILL attempt to put a positive twist on this. "Oh..uh...em..we are still #6 in 40+ females". Watch ;D

I say a Gold AC format would be a nice, fresh format for the area. Sort of like WXLY in Charleston (but organized much better). Have 60s, 70s, and 80s...
maybe 50% 70s, 30% 60s and 20% 80s. It wouldn't be exactly Oldies, but it wouldn't be AC. That way they wouldn't be going back to Oldies, but could sneak enough Oldies in to please its fans and could go up against 'MYI since they're playing a lot of 70s music these days. It would be more of a mass appeal format. This is what some Oldies stations are doing to re-invent themselves but still keep the Oldies 'staples.' I guess this could be considered sort of a 'Jack' format but a little more contained and a regular presentation. Go to yes.com, and enter WXLY for an idea of what I'm talking about.

And 'SPA could go more of a Hot AC or even a Rhythmic AC direction, just re-tool the music.

I know I'm just daydreaming here probably...just sick of the same ole same ole boring formats and stuff. Thank God for XM!

I don't know about changing magic to rhythmic AC but I think they will do something like you suggest. They'll probably go after the oldies audience without having to admit they should have gone the direct route the first time. WMYI is a much more oldies based AC and they can reduce them while working on Magic.

Keep an eye on WRIX weekend programming over the next six months and see if it doesn't start making some noise, especially the late stuff on Saturday nights.

Yeah, maybe the Rhythmic AC idea was a little out there. It will be interesting to see if they give it a year. I just don't see how it would be possible....I mean, not showing up at ALL 12+? I know those don't matter, but still, that's pretty pathetic. It's obvious it's not working. Have yet to hear a positive comment on it, and it got quite a good bit of promotion so the word got out. They could shut it off completely and I bet they wouldn't get 5 complaints.

Gold AC like WXLY is very practical once you think about it...gives more 'wiggle room' than the Oldies format and the newer songs (late 70s-early 80s AC staples) could get the younger audience, but there would be enough 'oldies' to please the oldies crowd. May be TOO practical for what Entercom's tried over the years with 106.3 and the 103s.

I bet that WOLT would do better than 4 share if they would remove that Blowhard Bill Drake! Why does everything he does have to involve his resume? Just tune in (if you can stand it), It will make you gag!!!

I know Bill Drake likes to talk about himself alot, but do I respect the work in does in the Spartanburg community. He hosts several events in the community, does his "Battle of the Brains" quiz show for Junior High schools, the Christmas Music Festival, etc..

Anyway, I think Bill deserves the opportunity to keep doing his show, especially after how Entercom treated him (and WSPA-AM) when they owned it.

Davidson could care less about ratings anyway, they make money as long as the airtime is sold.

That's what makes it so funny that WOLI/WOLT has more listeners than Entercom's WGVC; they weren't even trying! :D

Drakes show just isn't my cup of tea either....it's kind of strange. But he's paid for the airtime, so he has every right to do what he wants I guess.

as for WGVC....how are they selling advertising? Packaged with Magic 98.9? If not, I don't see how they're going to keep the cash coming in. Nobody is going to advertise with ratings like that.

At this point a Jack or Steve format would definitely be better than the garbage that they are running right now.
I happened to pick them up here in West Columbia the other morning and can definitely understand why the ratings are in the toilet.

Was in the car with my wife last evening and we listened to it, what a disaster! My wife, being 'in the target', can't even stand it...well, being conservative and a 'housewife' may play a factor. If anyone at Entercom/WGVC is reading...please shut the xmitter off or flip the format! This is not going to work in Greenville, no use letting it linger! Nobody's listening and the longer it stays on the air like this the sillier it makes you look.
