Greenville... what the hell?

Anybody doing anything exceptional in Greenville? If not, what would you do?

Greenville has never been an exceptional market. But, if I had to program or own a station, I'd put a real CHR or alternative/active rock station on the air.

OK, I guess you are saying this because of the deomgraphic make up of the Greenville area... large percentage of 18-24 men, right.... not based on personal prefernce, etc... I would think something more mainstream like Urban or Country.... give me some data to back your up.... I'm interested.

I must admit that I am working off of personal preferences here. There are a number of urban stations there and a couple of country stations too. There's a wide-open CHR and rock hole (not classic rock) that can be filled. With the Delta having a heavily black population, the chances of CHR or rock doing well would be stacked against me somewhat. However, I would take the risk and try to make it work. If it doesn't work, then I can say at least I tried.
______________

There ya go, give it the 'ol college try!
Hope you're not planning on spending your own money. Maybe P.T. Barnum was right.
______________

Speaking of "what tha?"... I was in the area Friday for most of the morning, heard nothing but a dead carrier on 960. More specifically what sounded like an un-squelched STL receiver.

A little dinking around shows that ABG is owned by the same folks who own a successful AAA station in Chattanooga (WDOD-FM).

Just a thought...

You mean I can't spend yours? LOL. Again, I know I would take a huge risk by doing what I would do as planned, but it doesn't work out, I'll try something else, like urban or country that tungnut suggested. Maybe I am a sucker.

There's nothing exceptional in Greenville. And no matter what you do, you can't make any money thanks to WIQQ's "sell anything at any rate" approach. WDMS is almost as bad. I had a damn good oldies station and a classic rocker there, but never made any money. My best advice about Greenville is to avoid it altogether. It's just not worth the time and trouble. If you've ever been there, you know what a sh**hole it is.

They had sold WABG-AM to a black preacher some months back, but apparently that sale didn't close. It's a 3-tower disaster that nobody would want. Not even the owners care about it. They moved the TV to Greenville years ago anad left the orphaned AM in Greenwood.

Hmmm. Is (or I guess *was*) it the only N/T for the Delta, of course excluding Jackson and Memphis?

I passed through there around Christmas and they still had Rush on, albeit weak and distorted.

WDSK-AM was the first fulltime N/T station in the Delta (now sports). WROX Clarksdale was also N/T (simulcast with WDSK). WGVM in Greenville (daytimer) was also N/T at one point. WTCD-FM out of Indianola now is the only N/T in the Delta. WABG-AM carries Rush, but last time I heard them, they were playing music in other dayparts. Lots of dead air.
