Greenville

Not any posts about Greenville's radio recently...seems everything is Myrtle Beach lately.
Any thoughts, insight, ideas? Predictions? Rumors?

All I really listen to is WESC, Magic, My102.5....only gripe is that the ACs need to get on the ball with adding new songs. Heard WTCB in Cola. over the weekend and they were already spinning some pretty recent songs that we probably won't hear for a while. Bleeding Love and Time of My Life aren't "fresh lite rock" anymore, Magic...oh well. Guess Entercom likes to wait a while with Magic to help prevent too much overlap with WFBC.

My102.5 is sounding much more focused. Not as much 70s it seems, I'm liking them more lately. Was nice hearing more variety there this weekend. They are promoting "the best mix all weekend long"....but they were still running 70s weekend jingles Saturday morning but I think they pulled them later. Anybody home there?

i agree there is not much talk about greenville radio. i also listen to the two country stations and the two ac stations and sometimes 101.1. 102.5 has always been my favorite probably because they played more 70s music. their regular format is good too. might be time for a change on the weekends. i would suggest a 70s weekend maybe once a month with 70s prizes and 70s prices from sponsors during that weekend with coupons that listeners could print from the station website.

That's a great idea....I would also suggest a "70s Sunday" like some AC and oldies stations do...play 70s from noon to 7pm on Sunday. That way the songs don't get repetitive and they can keep the 70s fans happy. Nice little block and it doesn't interrupt the flow of the regular format as much. Yes, Rock 101 is very good. Probably one of the best in the area (but not a JB&B fan).

103.3 can be filed with 96.7, 1440, 660, 1260, etc.. have dead air 24/7/365 and very few if anybody would notice. :-\ Own special league of radio is right.

Seriously, I'm sure 103.3 has cult followings with its shows.....but I doubt many are listening. I find it confusing and find the programming boring. Not a fan of time-brokered radio. Consistency is better. There....some WOLT bashing ;D

yep. Forgot those existed! (well, except for the AMs).

None of the 'insignificant' signals could ever really have potential except the 103s if sync'd up (103X, Oldies, Star, Walk) with normal programming, like that will ever happen again....and 96.7, and it's even hindered with its poor signal in parts of Spartanburg Co.

i don't think any of the lower powered stations will ever be a player. entercom killed 1330 and 950 by moving talk to 106.3 and i doubt they will spend much time or money on them now since the revenue potential is low. the same is probably true for 96.7. low revenue potential and bigger stations in the building.

right freqdev. G/SP is pretty bad with AMs due to the way the market is spread-out. Entercom will probably eventually sell the AMs and they'll go Spanish or religious. I don't see the point in keeping those AMs with 106.3.

just a random thought....does anyone else think 102.5 has changed their music recently? I'm hearing some stuff they've never played before and it seems more focused. Seems the '70s songs have been reduced.

i hope some of the small stations don't have to go dark during the recession.

i prefer 102.5 over 98.9. 98.9 has the longest station identification in the history of radio. as i have mentioned the announcement of every title of every song followed by the dj is annoying. i know that 102.5 didn't play 70s last weekend. i like the 70s but my listening on weekends is in and out of the car.

That's something I was wondering about, re: stations going dark during the recession. I wonder how some of the smaller ones like 104.9, 103.1, 1260, the ones leasing 1440, etc are doing.

70s weekends are apparently gone. No mention of them and regular format is playing. Yes, 98.9 really needs to dump those tags. Do we really not know who sang Forever Young? Little Jeannie? Baby Love? The only format I would do that on is a Jack-FM type without DJs that plays a lot of odd songs. It's not like they're playing a lot of songs nobody's ever heard.
If you are speaking of their legal id, I agree. That part about 97.7 and Entercom is pointless. How many care who owns them?

Well, just trying to get some Greenville discussion going....

not only has My102.5 cut back on 70s, dropped the weekends - they apparently aren't doing the 70s Saturday night thing either - guess that went away with the weekends. Are they still doing jazz on Sunday mornings? Guess there was no purpose for a 70s Saturday night since 98.9 is doing one anyway.

Naturally CC would never consider, but with most 'specialty' programming gone from 102.5, they should come up with some other features to do throughout the week to keep things interesting. Maybe a _ in a row type thing every hour or a few times a day would be interesting. Magic always has a lot of special things going on....My needs something to wake it up. Noticed My102 was running some contests earlier. Just some ideas.

Ha. No kidding. Saw that earlier.

Oh, Memo to Magic: stop running those liners on the weekends saying they're the only lite rock station playing 'more than just old lite rock.' Not true anymore. Either they aren't paying attention to the competition or are just lazy. And jazz is gone from 102.5 on Sundays, business as usual at 9:50 something with Lizz Ryals.

Well, in desperation of something Greenville-related to post...

I hear 98.9 has a new (and thankfully, shortened) legal ID and it says WSPA Spartanburg/Greenville/WSPA-HD1. Why are they suddenly ID'ing the HD....did they get their wrist slapped or something? I haven't heard another station in the area do this (and they have subchannels, 102.5 is jazz, 92.5 is bluegrass) but I know many big-city ones do. Is it a law?

it is not necessary to identify the hd-1. they must have asked an engineer for guidence. ;D the hd-2, hd-3 etc. do have to be identified as wspa hd-2, spartanburg. they are also required to run eas tests etc

Well...I'm just thankful they shortened the thing. It went on too long....nobody cares if it's an Entercom station. Those who do know, and those that don't just think it's a commercial.

If we're going to open up Greenville ID's - is it just me, or does the new WYRD-FM ID say "serving the UPSTATES of South Carolina..." ?? More than one upstate?? We're really getting bored, aren't we??

All HD channel's have to be ID'ed. Including HD2. I'm not sure why WESC is not saying "WESC-FM/HD Greenville ..." Is WSSL, WMYI and WBZT doing the same thing? It's most likely because of the interpretation of the rules by CC corporate.

Here is the meat of the rule from our friends at the FCC ...

A radio station operating in DAB hybrid mode or extended hybrid mode
shall identify its digital signal, including any free multicast audio
programming streams, in a manner that appropriately alerts its audience
to the fact that it is listening to a digital audio broadcast

I found it at http://www.hallikainen.com/FccRules/2009/73/1201/
