GREENVILLE'S LEGENDARY WQOK 1440

Now I'm gonna reveal my age here but as someone who grew up listening to WQOK in the 60's and 70's, I feel this Wikipedia article is dead-on in its description of this legendary station! Read on.

I added some historical background to the WGVL article, but given the number of contributors to both that article and the one linked to above, merging the two seems like quite an undertaking.

If no one objects, I'm going to do it. I'll copy from the WGVL article making sure to identify contributors, redirect it, and rename the WQOK article.

I think it is great to merge the two articles. The "four towers of power" are still there on White Horse Road and the building looks pretty much the same as it did when it was WQOK's studio/transmitter site, though it is just a transmitter site for WGVL now.

I have always thought it was the prettiest directional array I have ever seen and I am still in awe of it every time I go by. You can even pull into the Ingles Supermarket parking lot next door and get a good close look at it.

At one time, all four towers had beacons. At night you could see the "four towers of power" from just about anywhere in Greenville.

That turned out to be a lot harder than I thought. I messed up putting the delete template on the pages, and I went to the Help Desk and asked what was going on. I got disagreement over whether I should merge the pages! The merger had been proposed for two weeks.

I just basically said if I didn't get help I'd take my ball and go home. No one would be able to access the WGVL article despite all the links. They'd have to do a search.

In the middle of the night someone finally noticed what was going on and fixed it.

Coming soon some air checks of QOK from the mid to late 60's. Check the source info below.

scanned the dial today and heard the espn radio network on 1440. better then simulcasting contemporary christian music

Yes, they're also airing a good local sports show, Open Mic Daily, 3pm-6pm. And, Phil Kornblut's Sportstalk 6pm - 8pm.

The folks that program 1400 in Spartanburg have leased out 1440. While it would be nice to cover the area with one signal, two signals right next to each other on the dial isn't bad. Covering both cities should help protect the ESPN affiliation in case Entercom decides to change format on 950/1330.

I noticed that there is a construction permit for the WHRZ/WLFJ-HD2 translator at 97.1 in Cowpens to move to the WSPG tower? The translator has been off for a few weeks. Is an FM translator on the horizon for WSPG? The current translator owner has already sold translators to WZZQ in Gaffney and WQUL in Woodruff.

Actually, it's Greg McKinney and Tim Holland that are leasing 1440 in Greenville. They have a joint sales agreement with WSPG. And, yes, WSPG has plans for the FM translator for Spartanburg.
