Greenville's WORD Trimulcast

Does it make sense for Entercom to keep their talk station on an FM and 2 AM stations? I figured it might be transitional but maybe the coverage on 106.3 FM isn't enough for WORD to go with that alone. Could they make a go of it on the AM stations with sports? I try to listen to WCCP-FM out of Clemson but it's pretty spotty.

I have wondered why they keep the trimulcast on since all 3 signals overlap somewhat in Greenville County. Regardless, IMHO both of the AM's serve areas where 106.3's signal gets pretty spotty. If you don't mind listening to AM, during daytime hours 1330 gets a more listenable signal into Pickens and Anderson counties than 106.3. 950 does the same for areas such as Cherokee and Union counties as well as the adjacent NC counties. Of course at night it is a different story. Although I would like to hear sports on 950 & 1330, I wonder if Entercom is afraid it will lose some listeners if they take talk off of the AM's.

Here are the maps, from Radio-Locator, and as you can see, they overlap quite a bit:

106.3: http://radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/pat?call=WYRD&service=FM&status=L&hours=U
1330: http://radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/pat?call=WYRD&service=AM&status=L&hours=D
950: http://radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/pat?call=WORD&service=AM&status=L&hours=D

1330 does help in Pickens County where 106.3 can be iffy. 106.3 sure helps south of Simpsonville, because now I can get it where 1330 and 950 were hard to get. I just wish they would stop telling us it's "loud and clear on FM." I'd love to see Sports on the AMs. Overall, I don't think they would lose much by dropping the AM's. If they would turn off the stereo carrier on 106.3, you'd be surprised at how much better the signal would be (that helps 104.9 from Clemson greatly) and it may help some of the holes.

As long as 106.3 is broadcast in glorious FM mono, the sound quality will be good most everywhere in the Upstate...even if it gets staticky....no more so that the AM's, so I fail to see an issue here.

Flip the AM's to sports.

Amen. If Entercom would put the FM in mono, that would help. 104.9 is a testimony. I tested 1330 today for a few miles and it starts going around the 385/185 interchange (and bridges even before then). Once you're down in to Simpsonville it has static badly.

If they flipped the AM's, they would lose the "WORD" branding, though since the calls are on 950. I guess they want to keep the brand, but they could just go by "News Radio 106.3."

If they make any changes, it would be a wonderful opportunity to bring back the heritage WFBC calls -- which should have never left, IMHO.

doing a sports talk would require hiring a staff. entercom is not going to do that.
I would think they could run satellite only via programming from ESPN or FSR. Granted, it wouldn't do as well as if they had a local show, but it would be better than duplicating something from a C3 FM that covers the area fine.
