I think the smarter move would have been to negotiate a Tim Matthews circa late 90's to 2005 or so deal with the Ticket. ESPN were morons for putting greggo on from 7-10 where the show was constantly bumped for mavs, MLB playoffs, high school football, and every random un-listenable Cowboy show from a bowling alley...however a late night 11pm-2am type of show could work. The listener doesn't care who's actually paying his salary and I think for the limited cost for the time, I imagine a profit could be turned. And isn't that all that really matters...considering what the initial plan was to steamroll hick small town PD's into clearing the show. I'm pretty sure Tim Matthews wouldn't have done the show for so long if he or his partners were losing money. He did an ok show and always had a ton of various short and longer term sponsors.
I believe Dan Bennett and Cumulus would gladly cash that check for those hours if it meant the station made a dollar more then what would normally run.
Plus, let's face it, The Ticket (Hardline especially) can't go an hour without mentioning greggo.
If the Fan rejected a similar deal for their morning show, I think that too was a mistake by them...add that to the laundry list that's being compiled.
