GRHOF Event Last Night

The Georgia Radio Hall of Fame event last night was incredible. John Long and his crew will have a hard time topping this one next year.

It was a multi-media show with actual aircheck snippets, animation and several videos masterfully voiced by John Young. The 2008 Career Achievement Inductees were the original Braves broadcast team of Skip Carey, Pete Van Wieren and Ernie Johnson (with Skip Carey represented by his son Josh), Bill Bowick, Gary Corry, Captain Herb Emory, Red Jones, Scott Slade, Tony Taylor and Del Ward. Legendary WSB newsman Aubrey Morris won an award established in memory of Elmo Ellis.

The Legacy (deceased) inductees included Jimmy Bridges, Barry Chase, Jimmy Deer, George Fisher, Bill Powell, Robert Rounsaville, Zenas Sears and Jim Wilder.

John Young presided over the Z93 reunion. In attendance from the Z93 CHR crew were Steve McCoy, Ross Brittain, Steve Davis, Jay Andrews, Lindsay, Dale O'Brien, (CBS Radio president) Dan Mason, Chris Thomas, Steve Mapel and Randy Reeves. Mason was the evening's master of ceremonies and came across as down to earth.

I was like a kid in a candy store during the hour of socializing before the event. I walked around looking at name tags and spoke with as many of my radio heroes as I could. Atlanta's JJ Jackson, now in Louisville radio, made the trip for the event as did Dennis Winslow. Others I spotted (and not already mentioned) included Kelly McCoy, Dennis Winslow, Russ Spooner, Steve Brown, the legendary Kent Burkhart, Jerry Blum, Gary McKee, Sandy Weaver, Scott Woodside, Mark Arum, Candace Pressley, Eileen Kimble, Harley Drew, the Rounsaville family, the Sears family and Jerry Blum. I'm sure I've inadvertently left someone out.

A few personal thrills were speaking to Ross Brittain before the event and introducing myself to two of my current radio heroes, Scott Slade, the first voice I hear every morning, and Steve McCoy.

It was a truly great night.

I'll second that! It was a great evening and was fun to meet some of these legends for the first time, as well as reconnecting with some I knew already.

It was also great to see you again, Roddy! We'll have some stories to share at the next Radio-Info social. :)

I especially liked the part at the end where Long told all the 'young' folk to make radio fun again. I learned about a lot of people last night and had a great time! ;D
Now all I need to do is find a Hawks costume and a studio to hide out in .. ha ha

Young actually only voiced the Z93 thing. The other videos were produced and voiced by world class imaging talent, Randy Brown of Brown Media dot net. Brown was once one of the best top 40 jocks in America. Most knew him as Chriostopher Haze at legendary stations XEROK 80 and KNUS.

It was a great night indeed and the ol' cheesehead loved every minute! Great to see you Roddy!

Okay. Ludlow Porch was telling stories about how he and Skip Carey tried to crack up each other on the air. One time while Skip was reading the news, Ludlow walked up so Skip could see him. Then Ludlow opened his zipper. Ludlow then walked back a few feet and started slowly pouring water from a bottle into a large tin can. By the end of the newscast, Skip had his face down on the desk.

Oops. My bad. I also called him Steve Brown in my post above. John Young introduced him to me.

....from a bottle into a large can. *I'm writing this down for future reference* ;D

The best moment was seeing the Z-93 staff I worked with together again. Priceless. I truly enjoyed making the Z-93 Reunion video shown at the GRHOF banquet, and if you'd like to see it head to http://www.grhof.com and download it from radio videos. None of us expected applause as our faces appeared onscreen that night, and I wasn't alone in shedding a tear. Hearing John Young talk about music radio in Atlanta, movers and shakers and how vital music radio still is, meeting early 1970's heroes of mine like Dan Mason and Machine Gun Gary, hearing Scott Slade thank Chuck 'Boo' Barron for recommending him to Jay Thomas at WAYS, all the great on air stories, seeing and hearing Randy Brown's incredible presentation for all inductees and notables afterward - it was an unforgettable evening of Atlanta radio.

Thanks to Roddy for being there and writing his words here about the GRHOF, and thanks to the Atlanta radio community, and others reading this, for putting up with my going on. I was so proud to be a part of that night, and if you missed it - make plans for next year.

Jay Andrews

Great video Jay. You're right it was a night to remember! Didn't you love Ernie Johnson telling what Skip Cary about Boortz? Classic!
