Groove 730 AM - Now On the Air!

I don't mind religious music, however K-Love was a bad choce. They were doing very well during the last few months with the oldies music variety. Now, I have them removed from my radio choices permanently.

Z730 needs to try a similar format to what W-THZ was doing... I agree they need alot of help..

So, I guess Z's engineer isn't the LEGENDARY Gary Hattaway as Liz Luke indicated a couple of pages back on this thread?

Yes indeed I work with the legendary Gary Hattaway. I have learned everything I know about radio from this guy. He set the standard in Oldies Radio processing on many stations thoughout his career and I follow that example. I greatful to know such a man in this industry!!

I live east of charlotte and after 8 pm, Z730 disappears from AM. What would it take for them to have the same coverage as news radio WBT?

50, 000 watts and a clear channel.
They are on a clear channel. They've got enough power because they're farther to the left than WBT. You don't need as much power on the left end of the dial.

There is more to it than that. It also helps that they are non-directional.
I kind of figured that. It's actually not THAT far to the left anyway.

WBT is non-directional, too, though. It's only after dark you can't hear them to the west.

I've heard it really well in areas like Rockingham and also got a listenable signal in the mountains west of Asheville.

Oh, wait, I didn't read the original post that carefully. The person WAS talking about after dark. At which time CKAC Montreal gets priority. And would you believe Vancouver has a 50,000-watt all-traffic station???

A great transmitter, really good processing, and a talented air staff will not be enough to produce a winning radio stations with Z730. They are hampered by their sign on and sign off or high power / low power hours. In the winter months they will miss the bulk of morning and afternoon drive due to power change. I am really sorry about this for Charlotte desperately needs a Classic Hits/Oldies station but it is not Z730.

Actually the night power isn't too bad really. It's not going to cover the entire TSA but it's better than I expected. Lets face it music on AM is an uphill fight and has been since about 1985 and that's being generous. It's nice to have at least one AM station playing music I like so I wish them luck.

I'm not sure what it will take for Z to make it. In other words: How much money do they have to make to pay the bills?

Good post Mike. Z730 needs to be giving a huge pat on the back for jumping in and attempting to make a dent in the format void in Charlotte. Try as they will there is still somewhat of a small town feel to the presentation and maybe some real aggressive format alterations could pump them up some. I normally do not hear the station until after 7'ish and that does me no good on my communte. There will never be another Big Ways in Charlotte. Let's put all of this behind us and enjoy the holiday weekend.

I heard GT yesterday and he sounded like he was having a great time... what was his "up and down the dial" history? I thought I remembered him from an Asheville station or maybe Raleigh...
Thanks...

GT spent years at 99.9 KISS, the CHR days and country.

If my CRS is not failing me, I believe that he spent quite a bit of time at WRGC (WMSJ) and maybe some at WWNC?
