Grundig G8 Traveller

OK, an early Christmas present from BRNout. By happenstance, I happened to notice that Radio Shack is selling G8's for an unbelievable price of $29.99. Only until 11/30 though. Now, I happen to have this radio and find it to be an incredible FM dxer - particularly given it's size and usual $50 price tag. It is very sensitive and - thanks to its DSP chip, it is extremely selective. The thing pulls in FM signals that even my car radio trouble with. On the AM side it's good to excellent as well. The DSP chip has its quirks, including a soft mute that lowers the volume on stations that are below a certain threshold. It's stereo threshold is also a little high - probably designed to minimize the static on weak signals.

However, all in all, the G8 is incredible - particularly in crowded urban environments. Great little dx machine. Just figured I'd pass along word on the deal because it's a steal.

Please note that I have absolutely no interests in Radio Shack or Eton Corp. My only interest is when there's a good deal to be had and I was pretty happy to be alerted to it myself; so I figured I'd pass it along.

Heck, I'm still on the old Grundig Majestic. Just can't go wrong with that old cabinet, am fm lw sw. Put a few new tubes in there, and you have excellent sound.

Guess you weren't talking time travel, however.

No, the new ones don't have that classic sound quality and workmanship that's for sure. However, with some of the latest technology, even some relatively cheap radios offer selectivity that the old ones couldn't. Given the FCC's penchant for jamming every frequency - AM and FM - with something (or as I like to call it, the balkanization of the band), that ability is becoming more important all the time.
