Grundig Satellite 750 Tecsun S2000

What is the AM BC performance like on this radio? Is it better or worse than the Panasonic RF-2200? What are the variations in these radios? Are they discontinued? I see differences in pictures I've found, like power inputs, perhaps other differences?

Any user reviews from any of you?

Amazon no longer sells the Satellit 750, but Universal Radio has a limited number of refurbished models. Also, you can still get the Tecsun S-2000-branded version from anon-co.com.

When Jay Allen reviewed the 750, he gave it two stars for AM reception vs. five stars for the Panasonic RF-2200. With that said, the 750/S-2000's ferrite antenna can be switched off when you connect an external AM antenna, which is something that can't be done on the Panasonic. In Jay's review, he states that the radio performs very well on AM with an external antenna.

I've been thinking about getting this radio for its antenna capabilities on AM and LW. I'm not aware of any other portable radios sold today that give you the capability to disconnect the internal antenna when using an external one.

You actually can use an external antenna with the RF-2200 by wrapping several turns of wire over one end of the ferrite rod. You can kind of experiment with the number of turns. If the antenna has enough gain, turn the RF Gain all the way down and increase slowly until overload signs arise. It's best to have a tuned circuit in the antenna to preselect the signal.

I have used a modified Tom Kneitel tuned AM preamp with the output coupled to the ferrite rod inside decent but not great radios. I used to listen to most of the Chicago AMs in Mecosta County, MI in the DAYTIME. WIND and WLS and dozens of other stations were wall to wall with the setup, some 175 miles away. At the time, no stations besides WBRN had a signal above 0.25 mV/m, and most considerably less. WMAQ was the second strongest signal in the area at the time.

The only "radios" I have used that were better than the RF-2200 were a couple of field strength meters I used.

Thanks for the information.
