I saw on a commercial night that GSN will be showing the old game shows starting Monday shows like:

To Tell The Truth
What's My Line?

And others

Interesting. Looks kind of like more back to basics. GSN has tried several different versions (like the horrible 2002 reboot) and none have really been that successful. It's a good concept for a network but I guess I can see why it wouldn't be more popular. I still watch somewhat regularly.

FWIW, I don't remember seeing it mentioned here, but Sony now has the majority stake in GSN. I'm no psychic, but I could see DirecTV having less and less of a stake in the network in the future.

It's too bad GSN can't split up into a GSN 1 and a GSN 2.
One that leans more current/recent classic and one that leans more classic/color classic (classics that are in color but still older than what would air on a GSN 1)

Man id would love to see the Cullen version of The Price Is Right again, but sadly when the copyright runs out you tend to
want to see them even more

I'm a huge fan of Black and White Overnight and previously Black and White Sunday Night. I'll DVR the shows and watch them later in the morning. My favorite is What's My Line? including trying to recognize the celebrity guest.

When GSN stops airing B&WO I'll stop watching the channel.

I highly doubt they would have two GSN's just for the fact that only one has been a pretty uphill battle for almost 20 years. They ought to have a classic GSN from end of infomercials until 6pm and a modern GSN from 6pm until infomercials.

One should be all new Shows and other for Reruns like Vegas in a couple of years.

I'm just glad it hasn't degenerated into an abutment for reruns of sitcoms and dramas and movies ("Quiz Show," anyone?) about game shows.

They also haven't started stretching the 30-minute shows to 40-minutes, have they?

Don't give them any ideas! ;)

Frankly, I can think of only a handful of movies based on
game shows; "Quiz Show" and "Slumdog Millionaire" may be
the best, but there's an older one from 1950 that's pretty
funny. It's called "Champagne For Caesar" and it stars Ronald
Colman as a perpetually-unemployed genius who goes on one
of these shows with the intention of putting the sponsor (a
soap company) out of business. Vincent Price is hilarious as
the president of the company, who sees everything he's worked
for going down the drain and plots to find the one thing Colman's
character does not know.

There were movie versions of "People Are Funny" (circa 1945)
and "Queen For A Day" (circa 1951), but I doubt if many people
today are familiar with those shows.

So I think it would be highly unlikely that GSN would start carrying
movies based on game shows. However, I would like to see the kinescope of
Jackie Gleason's "Studio One" production, "Uncle Ed And Circumstance,"
about a family laughingstock who goes all the way on "The $64,000 Question"
and suddenly gains the respect of his relatives. Without having seen it, I
wonder about their motives. There's also the classic "Honeymooners" episode
where Ralph bones up for a week (and runs Alice almost crazy) on popular music
for his appearance on "The $99,000 Answer." I don't, however, expect to see
either on GSN.

Sorry to go OT, as I don't get GSN, but since we are discussing classic TV "game shows on film," tonight on Antenna TV was the first of a 2-part "Burns & Allen" where Gracie was hypnotized into being the smartest woman in the world, much to the amazement of all her friends, but to the consternation of George, who misses the old Gracie, because he has no show without her.

Part 2, which ought to air next Friday at 6 EST (but verify with online guides!) has Gracie on the "$100,000 Question" and breezing through difficult questions. However, George does his best to scuttle the game. I won't give away any more for next week. :) The episode is called "Gracie Is Brilliant."

Here's what I don't quite get about game shows. Are they still popular? We saw the revival of Let's Make A Deal, Jeopardy/Wheel of Fortune/Family Feud are still around, Price Is Right has been going for decades, and there is the occasional Minute to Win It, 5th Grader, Don't Forget The Lyrics, or Deal Or No Deal that becomes popular for a short while in prime time. GSN has had a couple that created buzz (Great American Bible Challenge is an example). They definitely, though, seem like a niche type of program now compared to 30 or 40 years ago. It seems pretty difficult for one to last very long these days.

GSN does deserve props for, except for a brief while in 2004? when they added reality/competition shows, staying true to form despite never doing that well. I don't think they have that many original shows anymore.

Well, if the ratings are enough to justify keeping a show going, in the sense of being economical to produce, compared to scripted shows that writers get paid for, then yeah they are still popular. "Let's Make a Deal" replaced the uber-long-running soap "Guiding Light"; supposedly even if LMAD had lower ratings than GL, if it's cheaper to produce, that's the bottom line---bang-for-the-buck, or net profit.

I cannot speak for GSN, or even my paragraph above, as I am not in the biz---but basically they are in it for the money.

Speaking of Crossword (I assume you mean Merv Griffin's Crosswords), I am looking for a copy of the one ep where the "winner" had a score of MINUS $250 AND lost the bonus round, and the host said, "You still have your pride." Good thing for them that there was no actual studio audience for that show.

I think that RTV shows a couple of Merv Griffin's Crosswords episodes a day. 9-10AM PT on KIRO-DT2, but I don't know about others.
