GSP ratings

Oh and LOL @ the sports stations at the very bottom. The Fan isn’t bad but this just isn’t a sports market. The only sports station that’s managed to get a following has, for obvious reasons, been WCCP. I’m sure they outperform both Fan and Fox Sports combined.
It's not a sports market? I've never seen so many sports stations in one market.

That’s the problem. Even Charlotte only has one sports station that’s competitive, then, the FOX Sports translator and WZGV do nothing.

Sports has billing potential and can fit in to cluster strategies which is why GSP has The Fan and FOX Sports Upstate to begin with. Then there’s FOX Sports on 1400/98.3 in Spartanburg, WCCP on 105.5/97.5. WCCP excluded, one issue the sports talk stations have in this market is they don’t have any notable BIG teams other than 104.9 having USC which is a secondary team in the upstate. WROQ has the Panthers, WESC has the Tigers. Neither of those teams will be on the sports talk stations in the upstate because they lack solid full market coverage. The amount of stations doing it has fragmented an already small audience. Someone will eventually blink.

another factor is that everybody loves a winner and this year clemson, usc, and the panthers are all between mediocre and terrible. if any of those teams were competing for a championship it would naturally boost interest and listenership from p2s during the season.

Carolina Panthers rebuilding year, with new coach and new quarterback, has failed to meet expectations. Seemed like a good plan, strong potential, but something has gone wrong.

Not a ton to see here, The Block is down but still doing quite well. Even their stream showed up (barely). 104.9 and 99.5 are dwelling comfortably down in the basement as usual. X-98.5 is down, Magic is stuck at their 1.8. WORD has gained no listeners from moving to 98.9 or 94.5 going away.

One thing is notable - 92.5 WESC has been on a downward trend for a while and I believe it’s at the lowest point I’ve seen it in a long time.

We should see the old Salem stations roll off next month, I’m guessing this monthly covered a few days before EMF took over.

Oh, too late to edit my last post, but I can’t remember when 93.3 has been ahead of 98.1. Hot 98.1 still does alright but this seems to be their new normal post-Dex and Barbie T.

since everthing is "rigged" from elections to football games.....maybe neilsen ratings are too?
They are audited by the Media Research Council ( Home | MRC ) which is an organization founded by ad agencies to make sure radio and TV research is done with sound methodology and procedures.

shares are down for all formats, but overall rank doesn't change that much. terrestial radio will always be around, but i believe the big c3s will be digital providers for the next generation

WESC and WYMI are sinking. WTPT and WHZT bounced back. WYRD and WFBC stayed relatively static. WSPA got their Christmas miracle while it looks like The Block got a lump of coal for Christmas after being on a major uptick.

WESC’s decline isn’t good. Country isn’t struggling as a format, and WSSL is doing the complete opposite. Perhaps new country is strong, and at the expense of the gold/classic country format?

It’ll be interesting to see if Christmas music helps bring some of the old Magic listeners than didn’t know where it went to 106.3. The Christmas music was well covered by the media as usual. Around a 3 share is an improvement. I’m interested to see if it holds in to 2024 with AC.

Air1 is more popular than K-LOVE so far.

99.5 - is this station this bad? A 0.1!!!!! The best translator signal in Greenville has become the lowest rated. 104.9 hanging out at the bottom of the heap as usual.

Remember when WSPA could pull a 5 for the Christmas flips?

How many Christian CHR and Gospel stations can this market handle lol? The December numbers aren’t looking that healthy for anyone not WLFJ. I predict in 2024 there’s going to be cannibalization between all these stations lol.

99.5 is redundant and a prime example of cannibalization of having too many urban r&b/hip-hop stations already.

agree that country as a format isn't struggling. iheart has committed wesc to clemson which is 10 hours of talk on saturdays in the fall plus nascar all day sunday followed by christmas listening.

Is NASCAR even that popular anymore? Looking through their affiliate list, outside of Charlotte they aren’t on many powerful FM’s much less those owned by a big company like iHeart. That could be a tune out factor as well. I doubt iHeart is very concerned about WESC as long as it can be sold with Whistle and serves as a flanker.

I know one reason Summit flipped 99.5 was because they wanted a station where they could push new music, so I’m not sure if they’re concerned about ratings or not.

agree with the combo sales aspect. interestingly even though wesc trended down if you add wssl and wesc shares together it always is around 12 each month. i guess they are p1 and p2 to each other

We never see WKSF anymore but I’m sure there are listeners especially in the northern part of the market that may be listening to them too. It’s a solid signal pretty much everywhere. Seems like back in the Arbitron days they got around a 2 share or a bit less. Having 92.5 classic country and 100.5 new/recent country makes sense considering 99.9 is new country and overlaps a lot with 92.5 signal wise. 100.5 doesn’t do well in a lot of spots not far past the state line

Good point about WKSF they don’t show up anymore but in Asheville they’re still pulling monster shares each quarter.

One thing noticeable thing here is how all the Audacy stations are basically middle to lower end of the pack. With the recent Audacy bankruptcy I can’t see that bolding well for local talent should cuts come down the line at some point.
