To the person who editied the 970 WFLA wikipedia entry to say the news/talk format will be ending this September, and will be replaced by classical music... Very funny! 8)

It is funny how many people take what is in Wiki as fact. Some people don't realize that anyone can edit and post in completely ficitional information. The Wiki fact checkers may find it eventually, but some very false information sits up there for long periods of time.

Good joke on WFLA though. Someone at Genesis is having a good chuckle. Of course, only in Wiki can they get rid of 970.

The Wiki info for 620 is also incorrect. They continue to show that the station is 5,000 watts. The truth is that the station was 10kw day/9.8kw nites since I believe 1984 when Russian radio from Cuba was jamming both 620 and 610 WIOD out of Miami. It obliterated 1040 for a while too. When they put up the new shorter towers the power was recalculated at approx 11,400 watts day/11kw nites in order to obtain the same coverage as before. Granted the license says 5kw, but they have been operating on a permanent STA.

It must be so nice to be able to buy all the really powerful AM signals in a market, and sell powerful 820 to a Spanish broadcaster, so that signal will never go to a talk competitor, and sell 1040 to Genesis.

Who in Hades gave Crap Ch. the right to buy all the powerful AM stations in Tampa?

Of course it was the geniuses at Cox who decided to give up the 620 signal and get out of the AM business which really allowed C.C. to corner the market in AM sticks following the Jacor merger. CC managed to secure 620 and upgrade 1250 while making sure both 570 amd 820 stayed in the hands of non competitive formats.

Wonder why. Outgunned ( in terms of signal strength and $ ) by something like 10:1?

Hey, Eben, didn't you, or someone close to you, write ( or attempt to write ) a Wikipedia article on yourself?

What do you do Don? Do you work to allow your competitors to hurt you or do you try to get as much of the market of whatever you do as possible? If anything be mad at those who "back in the glory days of radio" you loved so much sold to these monsters of radio.

You're right there should be a salary cap in radio! Go work on Genesis and help them Don for free, oh and make 970 turn their signal down. WAH WAH WAH It's not fair.

Or be mad at the monsters who bought the rule change in Congress in 1995 and '96, forcing many of those operators to sell out or watch the big companies sell around them, and who've bought another round of rule changes at the FCC today... Wish I could get government-protected licenses that allowed me to sic men in black shirts with firearms on anybody who tried to start a new business behind my moat...

What really isn't fair is Florida having zero class A allocations and a small state like Iowa having two. I say treat them like congressional districts -- reallocate by population growth. Break up that allocation for WHO in Des Moines (market number one-hundred-and-HUH?) and give WWBA a decent night signal.

"Hey, Eben, didn't you, or someone close to you, write ( or attempt to write ) a Wikipedia article on yourself?"

Yes! Just to prove anybody could write anything on Wikipedia, and that anybody could get something removed from it. A friend of mine wagered that an entry on yours truly would last two weeks. I bet him that it wouldn't last nearly that long. And I was right!

Must be great having the $$ to buy all the major AM stations in a market- or sell them off to religious or Hispanic broadcasters to ensure you won't have to suffer any real competition.

What's the limit now for greedsters like CC: 30 stations in a market??

You'd be balling too if you had to compete against such monopolists.

But I guess they've bought you off as well.

I guess CC runs radio so well the cheap crap-o "broadcaster" can't even afford to air a friggin' 3 p.m. drive-time newscast on a weekday in a Top-20 market like WFLA-Tampa! What a bunch of jerks they are. Squeeze every single penny you can out of a dying medium.

What, it's too expensive ( my gosh, the employees want BENEFITS and MONEY. They don't deserve that pay. It's our money, our radio station, and our radio band! )

ah... for the old days...

Strip their stations to the bone, chase off "real" newsmen, then mouth off saying "the public doesn't want to receive their news via radio anymore." Duh. The geniuses at CC drove them away!!
Now the once-great WFLA is entirely syndicated after a.m. drive. Not even local news.

Defend that, you CC apologists.

In the interest of accuracy, the writer was referring to a Saturday at 3 p.m. But the rest of your post is well-taken ... what ClearChannel is doing to WFLA is just plain wrong.

Point taken.

I had the station on last night and noticed zero local news on the top of the hour at 10 p.m. ET.

Depressing, ain't it?

I remember a time when, in the early 1990s, WFLA talked about how they were considering live and local talk hosts during the overnights. Now we can't even get a local TOH newscast on tape after 7 p.m. ...

Okay, Mr. Expert. Try to buy an AM station in Tampa over 4kw and compete.
Or try to start some real talk radio against the plug-and-play crowd.

Is that possible today? You gonna be as sarcastic?
Not with CC hogging all the signals.

Thanks to CC, there's no way any kind of real AM talk radio or anything smacking of localism can happen today. CC has bought all the air rights.

Depressing??? I think what's happening over at 970 is just WONDERFUL, and it's happening all over this great country!

THANK GOD!

It's about time that true and honest purveyors of news and information (such as CC & newscorp) dominate the market and give us the good natured belt therapy that we so deserve! I tuned in to 970 last night and gone was the confusion of this local nonsense. I for one would like to thank the FCC for easing ownership restrictions! Tokyo Rose rocks my socks off.
