Guess what station is flipping again?

YES!!!! it's am1010.. and they are going back to sports!!! one more thing.. they are bringing back the sport biatchessss...

Somehow I doubt it, since Brantley is on 1470 and that station appears to be trying to upgrade itself,
although I don't think their goal of "family friendly" sports talk is realistic. (I heard a drop on Peterson's show with the word "damn" in it. Bet he'll get a visit from Jethro Maduri on that one!)

Again, someone explain to me why 1010 would go sports again, since it experienced basically mediocrity for most of the time it had the format previously (1999-2004). I do think the chicks are underrated and never have really found their true niche, which would IMHO be on a female-oriented FM talker for women who aren't into the minivan style of radio.

I doubt highly its Air America. In New York City, Air America is being forced off it's flagship station WLIB (what a callsign for them), cause they cant afford the pay for play fees anymore. In most areas, they are paying for the time, just like your local colon cleanser pitchman. They are also known to be paying their bills late, and have been begging for money.... They cant seem to find enough advertisers. Since 92.5 flipped, it's smart that CBS radio Tampa put older classic country on it's AM to protect WQYK FM. AM or FM it's still QYK...

Personally, I think classic country would be a perfect fit in T/SP. Granted, I haven't been in the bay area since 1991, but I still keep up with the market. Air America....yes, people are upset with Bush, WE GET IT!! That being said, I don't think AA would survive. Sports would make sense, only for the mere reason of, if you run a majority of the day off the bird, it's still relatively cheap to run (see also: WDAE and ESPN 1470).

Back in 1991, WQYK-AM had a similar Classic Country format. It drew nice 12+ but it was all upper demo. This time, the format hasn't even made the book.

With two other sports stations, there is absolutely no way to make any local spot money. Who is left to do a local show besides the Chix? And how good a fit were they on a sportser anyway? I will never understand those who think sports with a point-infinity is better than something else that might pull whole numbers. Let's face it, AA is just as cheap as Sporting News Radio, and there are always rumors about Paul Allen getting ready to euthanize that puppy. What's the difference between a third sports station off the bird and something else that might draw an unduplicated audience. AA is kicking butt in Miami, as far as English-language radio goes.

AA has been "dying" since the day it was born, to hear some people say it, and yet it is still there. Rush Limbaugh moves to lower-profile signals (WDBO to WFLF in Orlando, WBAL to WCBM in Baltimore), Michael Savage swaps stations (WABC to WOR) and nobody bats an eye. Air America changes signals and it's the Apocalypse.

can we lock this type of thread once and for all? it seems like everytime this topic gets bumped a page and a half, someone reposts.

Look, 1010 has Nascar, rod n redneck shows on the weekends, and classic country on a crap signal. And this works.

I'd like to see CBS Radio bring in the Spike Radio format they have in Las Vegas. That'd be a change for AM 1010. :) Spike 1010.

Okay..how 'bout ya Beecher? How about WQYK-AM..."Tampa Bay's 10Q" Original Rock and Roll...OLDIES ON AM A'LA WHBO...HOWARD HEWES and a lot of us would voice track..and make it down for remotes when needed. many of us burn-outs are still pretty damn good, and could casue some real street talk..even only for a little while. Good processing, and a smidgen of cheap promotion..we'd have fun, and CBS would make friends in the market. All pretty cheap in the big picture..

As they used to say in Los Angeles..."10-Q..for listening...10-Q very much!

Now, let me just dig around and find my Fisher SpaceExpander reverb box....it's here somewhere...

Beecher..call me on this..I'm serious 888-780-8542

Say, if 1010 is going back to sports....how in the world did 620 end up with Nascars Brickyard 400.....and, if its a yearly deal, look for them to air next Mays Indy 500.

Can the new Sports1010 with Bruno, Al Keck and the Chix put 1470 under in Tampa?

Will three Sports stations survive?

Billy

Jeff....this and/or an adult standards format WILL work here....Scott Shannon's True Oldies is close, however, just misses the mark. Sounds too much like what it is....a satellite fed format. Some local persaonality and flavor is lacking. And, of course, a one trick pony. Shannon is excellent, however, all Shannon all the time gets stale. No one is doing adult standards. Sinatra, Bennett, Connick, and company. Blended with some of the hipper "smoking jacket and martini" stuff....

We did an adult standards format at Cypress Gardens/Winter Haven AM WHNR for five years in the early '90s. While our numbers were'nt high (EVERYONE gets their backside kicked by WPCV "97 Country" in the Lakeland/Winter Haven book), for the format and market we did respectably, and had fun doing it. It was completely local, and we had a couple of local personalities such as News Director Jim Greenfield, who has covered the area for over four decades (after working several years covering Winter Haven for the Hall Communications cluster, he now works part time with the city).

Unfortunately, one of the two owners sold out, and the other's spouse became ill and eventually died. With apparant financial pressures from that and his remarrying, the station went belly up in 1995 and was dark for over a year until current owner Frankie Grover took it over.

WHNR was a great little station. CBS and local news at the top of the hour. REAL local news, with Greenfield
actually going out to cover stories. I think he already had several decades of local news coverage by then, which always puts to shame people half his age who claim to do local news that's all phoners and TV/wire rewrites. I hope Mr. Greenfield has made plans to donate whatever artifacts he has accumulated from his decades in broadcasting, as they would constitute a significant part of Polk County's history in the second half of the twentieth century, and perhaps has sat down with some archivist for an oral history recording session.

In some ways, WHNR was what WLKF should have been.

LKF was probably the first station to go into a talk format (1987) by FIRING all its local staff. Unfortunately, it followed a trend.

Earlier this year, 620 carried the Indy Racing League's St Pete Grand Prix, the Indy 500, and a few other IRL races. The Brickyard 400, despite being a NASCAR race, is part of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Radio Network package.

NASCAR's radio coverage depends on what tracks the races are held. MRN [Motor Racing Network], owned by the France family's International Speedway Corporation, carries races at tracks owned by that company as well as those at Pocono, Dover, New Hampshire, Watkins Glen [road course] and Martinsville. The Speedway Motorsports Company, owned by Bruton Smith, has its own radio network, PRN [Performance Racing Network], which broadcasts races held at its tracks in Charlotte, Richmond, Bristol, Las Vegas, Texas, and Sonoma, Calif. [road course]

Such a split of the NASCAR radio coverage can lead to inconsistencies like the above, with 1010 carrying the MRN and PRN races, while 620 gets the IMSRN-produced NASCAR race. Had 1010 chose to continue with IMSRN, like they did up until last year, 620 wouldn't have seized the IMS package.

The Brickyard 400 is distributed by the Indy Motor Racing Network. It is not a production of MRN. You get the Indy 500 and Brickyard and you have to guarantee to air a certain amount of other IRL races. I think 620 has been taking that deal for some time.
