Guest Hosts or "Best ofs"?

Simple question which I am curious of everyone's opinion--During a Holiday or Host's vacation; do you prefer a Guest Host to fill in or just a running of "Best of" segments/shows?

I'll second Don and add if any show is pretty much evergreen (like Clark Howard) it can be a best of.

Great point. Advice shows having a guest host might confuse listeners with different sorts of advice. One guy telling you to pay off a loan, then the next day some other guy telling you not to could be a problem.

Guest host if it's a serious, time-oriented show geared toward the latest news, or driving the news, as the case may be. It's good to hear other people's perspectives from time to time, even if it's the same topics.

Maybe best of if it's a serious,time-oriented show that has done a program that really stood out, like interview the Queen of England or J.D. Salinger [when he was alive][and if you could get them to clear a repeat], or something that made the news or did something noteworthy beyond giving opinions.

Best ofs are fine for advice shows, or [other evergreen] shows that rely more on interviews or comedy than timeliness.

I ran a poll about this subject to the people who use my directory. My question was specifically asking about Rush Limbaugh:
http://streamingradioguide.com/show-poll.php?pollnum
=670

About 45% say they would want a live show with a guest host. The remainder split between wanting to hear a Rush rerun or they would go listen to something else. When Rush (or Beck) are on vacation, the streaming audience plummets, especially if it is announced in advance.

Shows that can cover with "Evergreen" content (Dr Laura, Clark Howard, Roy Masters, most weekend shows) aren't much affected.

One big trend over the past several years is more and more stations are running "best of" Rush, Beck, Hannity, etc... on the weekends. I don't think this is just because of contractual obligations - my stats show they are some of the most popular news/talk shows on the weekends.

I don't like "best ofs" for topical shows at ALL.

For service/advice shows, I don't care.

Local talker WNIR/100.1 here never, ever runs "Best of" shows. When the main weekday/daytime hosts are gone, there's usually a live sub (Bob Earley, usually, who now hosts his own weekend show, though former newspaper columnist Stuart Warner has filled in once or twice, and afternoon newsman Phil Ferguson has also filled in). When morning co-host Stan Piatt was on vacation recently, the other three members of the show (Maggie Fuller, newsman Jim Midock and sports guy Steve French) just went without him.

When evening host Tom Erickson is off, the station plugs in a syndicated show to "fill-in" for him. TRN's Laura Ingraham and Michael Savage have been used recently...both shows air on sister one-lung daytime talker WJMP/1520 Kent. Ditto when Earley is off his Saturday/Sunday show.

As far as Rush goes, they pretty much do it right...with guest hosts most of the time, and best of shows on major holidays.

Darryl Parks will often fill in on holidays on WLW. Of course, for the time being he has a daily gig. Always liked that the PD of a large station would still fill in and do a weekend air shift. Doesn't happen too many places.

I am leaning towards "Best Of". Most of the shows I listen to seem lately to be signing up
awfully crappy guest hosts.

I do agree...choose your guest hosts with care.

I didn't like Bob Earley at all when WNIR started using him to fill in for Howie Chizek and Bob Golic. But he's grown on me. He also makes an effort to do a more compatible show when he fills in, vs. his own weekend nighttime show...which is very random and more silly.

Darryl Parks is unusually talented on-air for a member of management. He's also quite compatible with the style of station he...well...programs. :D
