Guide To Reading (And Enjoying) The Phoenix Board

Hello friends in the valley of the sun,

I keep up with many boards across radio-info and Phoenix is no exception. I do however have questions about some of the jargon, due to the often cryptic comments made on this very forum.

- Who is this Nurse Jeff character who is often referenced but never actually comments? (is he a made up person?)

- Why is there an ' in place of the "A" when talking about KTAR?

- Why are station frequencies partially spelled out (a la 6~twenty)?

- What is the origin for the term "sports parking lot"?

- What is the definition of "toaster talk"?

There are probably more questions that I will think of later. I do realize that most of this terminology seems to be coming from Dr. Akbar, is he some kind of inside joke?

Long live the QuikTrip,

Ryan

Answers:

(1) Nurse Jeff, Dr. Akbar and all those juvenile jokes are an imaginary world invented in a newspaper comic strip 15 or 20 years ago by Matt Groening, who went on to invent the Simpsons. Some sad little minion, or wanna-be minion, in the Clear Channel broadcast chain has assumed the identity of the comic character Dr. Akbar, and talks his imaginary friend Nurse Jeff. Both characters in the comic strip are quite gay. This is done to the infinite amusement of himself and his sock puppets. True story!

(2) re: KT'R. A long departed KTAR host rarely pronounced the third syllable very distinctly, something the Imaginary World noticed back in about 1995 and has been very amused by ever since. If you were here in 1995 like them, and like them could not come up with an original thought in the intervening decade, you, too, would find this very funny.

(3) This imaginary world is very upset that Bonneville has supposedly cheapened the market for AM stations in Phoenix by planning to move its successful newstalk operation, KTAR, to the FM band, and leave its very-successful sports talk and PBP station on the AM band. This amuses them greatly, although not one of them have figured out that this denegrates the station they hold so dearly, KFYI, the Clear Channel home of Rush, Sean and other right wing blabbers.

(4) Toaster talk, see number two. Once upon a time, KT'R supposedly talked about toasters. Or something, ask Drakbar.

(5) You forgot TMISU, which is actually the only very funny thing that cabal has come up with in 10 years. The Men In Secret Underwear is a reference to KTAR's owners, Bonneville, which is in turn owned by the LDS church, some of whose members for religious reasons wear undergarments that cover up more than the average amount of skin.

(6) Which brings up TMISoiledU, which is how others in the Phx board refer to Akbar, Legend City and the 2 or 3 other people participating in this slapstick imaginary world. Other references ionclude "What in the wide world of sports," "a 1976 Levi Gremlin", "the Buckeye media hut," "Gumpdumpsky" and "the lumber yard" (actually the transmitter location for a daytimer in Scottsdale on 1440 that has 52 watts at night, the only radio reference to this whole sad story).

Yes, the whole thing is rather sick. We put up with it because, under former management, no one was allowed to say anything else on this board, unless it was Kyle Hojem asking for airchecks.

Sad little minion?

Oh, get a sense of humor zuma.

(but, if you do, your unintentionally funny posts would cease)

NEWS FLASH, Dead Simons is tackling (pun) the big subject "What is your favorite Cardinals memory?"

I'm sure that Mr. Bidwell will give him a ticket to the game now.

BTW, I'm not gay, so stop the personal attacks, you tend to whine and attack people personally, quite a bit, which I am sure aren't in the terms of service for this board.

I didn't say you were gay, I said the characters in the comic strip are gay. Which they are.

And I think what I just wrote is damn funny, spot-on accurate and - perhaps - a little close to home.

To make it perfectly clear, Akbar and Nurse Jeff are gay in the comic strip, and there is quite a bit of nudge nudge joking about that in the Media Hut threads.

Legend City is not gay.

Not that there would be anything wrong with that.

Well, that makes one person, now go, and never darken my towels again. :D

(BTW, Legend City is not gay, but I heard that a few of the characters in the Lost Dutchman Gold Mine were.)

The short answer... because some ****** production guy thinks it's funny. Everyone else thinks it's old.

Note to moderators: Instead of deleting the word "******" as you usually do, could you replace it with "vinegar scented vaginal cleansing device" instead? Thanks

Thanks for the call, Ryan...before we answer your questions, can you tell us if it's raining where you are in Texas? Now the answers:

Nurse Jeff is a character. He posted years ago, but a lot of people confused him with me. Now I'm confused.

Multiple hosts and news people at the station formerly known as KREP dropped the "A" in the call letters. We do this in honor of Pppppreston Westmoreland, who was unceremoniously dumped by the Emmis Brain Trust. The EBT was replaced by TMISU.

We are bilingual, that's why dial positions are written both ways.

The Men In Secret Underwear have gutted a perfectly good (5k DA-N) AM station and will turn it into a Sports Parking Lot on 1/01/07. The last station they gutted was at 1500 and truly deserved it.

Toaster Talk is the kind of polite non-controversial talk conducted by hosts who have no opinion, no passion and no clue. To paint a mental picture, conjure up Jimmy Carter.

Nurse Jeff and I hope we've answered your questions and invite you to drop by the Buckeye Media Hut next time you're out our way.

"1980 was when Life in Hell started appearing in The Los Angeles Reader, the first of those hundreds of papers. Binky, a very disturbed anthropomorphic bunny, was its star, and the supporting cast was pretty much limited to his girlfriend, Sheba. They had an addition to their family in 1983, when a near-perfect stranger, with whom Binky had shared a single night of passion five years earlier, dropped off his one-eared son, Bongo, and then disappeared. Bongo (no relation) has since become an important part of the cast, representing the point of view of the child as wracked by anxiety and frustration as his parents.

"Akbar and Jeff started turning up in the background during 1984. They rose to prominence the following year, hawking Tofu Hut — the first of their many entrepreneurial ventures, most of which seem equally sensible. Their exact relationship is not quite specified — they may be gay lovers; but then again, they may be twin brothers. "

1984. 22 years of Akbar, Jeff and the Tofu Buckeye Media Hut.

Akbar (at the snackbar) came out of Groening's attempt to draw Charlie Brown, but he always came out as a middle eastern dwarf.

Chef Jeff came out of the "Akbar and Jeff's Airport Resturant" cartoon "Where the elite meet to eat reheated meaty treats"

My favorite was the Crabulene!

That is pretty much much what I surmised. Toaster Talk seems to be a real Bonneville staple. KSL's illegal ID spitting Doug Wright is a real card.

Thank you and please give Nurse Jeff my sincerest appreciation for clearing up these items of interest.

DOAH! See...this is why I don't allow Nurse Jeff to post anymore. It's about as confusing as our good friend ZumaPans ;)

Excuse me, but i"m not the one who is confused or speaking with imaginary friends.

Spare me the bother and e-mail me when you come up with your next original joke. TMISU was pretty good, once in every 9 or 12 years is about par for your course.
