Guides

Does anyone know of any guides for effects, like good combos for verb, delay, echo? I'm ashamed to say after a few years of doing production, I still can't duplicate stuff I hear on other stations, when I was learning I was discouraged from using effects to manipulate vo's and my internship was on and Orban Audicy with a really nice compressor, and my comercials don't have the punch I'd like, so I was hoping maybe someone had some advise or maybe knows of some good guides or plug-ins or something.

Hey dude - imo, a good place to start messing around with pre-sets for vo...is the scientific filter (filter drop down menu). Look for the -250 drop, then tweak your ass off :)

Maybe use the compander pre in the compression drop down menu...use some hard limiting, heavy & wide mastering. There are a lot of good pre's to start off with - then when you're more comfortable..you can tweak the settings to your liking. EQ can be frustrating (I know it is for me)...but you can preview your tracks as you tweak while trying to find the "sweet spot" you're listening for.

I like to mess with AA's distortion pre's, too...it's fun to add distressed vo under the original track. You can pan tracks to great effect, too. Layering adds depth and punch (if done right). Remember to always adjust volume to each layered track...as to not overmodulate.

Bottom line: explore, explore, explore. Hope that helps a little :)

Ah, Okay, Now that I know you are working with AA I'll offer a couple of my own quick fav's. The dynamics drop down will give you something like the orban compression (try any of the last three limiters), The graphic EQ is a lot like those old rack mount things (the ones with the knobs) and I know there are some die-hards who still perfer that stuff, but for me sometimes I like to drop the lows out...or the highs, and even both for an "alt sound". This is obviously real basic but can give variety for sure. There is also a preset in the FFT filter for "telephone" which can be nice. Flange if you want but to me some of the presents sound too much like bad 60s sci fi.
