Gulf Coast ratings

Wow...a newcomer to the number 1 spot. I wonder what dayparts on 104 get the highest ratings? People must like satillite feed talk on FM. It appears that the other local talker, WTNI has very low overall ratings, with the mighty 870 coming in above it. I know that TNI has a much smaller signal than WWL or WBUV, I wonder if this is a large part of the reason for small ratings?

Magic above K99 ??? I remember when K99 was constantly number 1 and Magic played second fiddle to keep anyone from invading on the top spot turf. On the side, RI shows K99's owner as Starr Broadcasting, which coverted a Moss Point station into today's K99 and then killed the legendary WQID :'( to start the less than stellar Magic  Any rate, all the other CC Biloxi stations have the right owner, but K99 has its long since removed first owner on RI, what's up with that?

Apparently the Dowdy's are too cheap to subscribe to Arb, so I don't know where their stations placed, sans Z95. (Thanks FM)

Triad has strong showings with Monkey, CPR and Go-FM but TNI, Hank and ESPN are all low. Makes you wonder how much longer classic country and sports will be around...

Rip Daniels holds a steady top spot will soundly defeating his closest competition, WQYZ, which lands a 3 overall share and seemingly the station is never advertised.
QYZ, once another great Coast station when it was Q92.5 with all 70s/80s music.

Once again Dowdy has the #1 Country station (#3 overall), Dowdy also has the #6 station . . . actually tied for #6 with Triad’s best rated station (5.4%). I bet it is tough to be in a small market when your group’s best station is ranked sixth!

In several markets Triad does well, wonder why they can’t compete in Biloxi.

Obviously Fran, if you knew anything about radio, you'd know that demographic breakdowns are what's key, not 12+, and I believe Triad does quite well hitting tops in their target demos with their ratings, and does very well competing...

Frank: 12+ means absolutely squat, which is why Arbitron doesn't mind releasing those numbers in most markets. Good for Dowdy doing well but I'm more interested in how they did in their target demos than with a huge snap shot.

In ref to demos, Dowdy is stout in all the key dayparts. As far as specific demos, I happily encourage others to pick a fight with Arbitron by posting non-public demo data.

Triad's WCPR #1 in the market in their demo 18-34 men (14.3), #1 men 18-49 with an 11.5, and beats Dowdy's #1 station WZKX in men 25-54 by a whole point---and that's not competing Fran?
107.1 the Monkey...beats their #1 station in women 18-34 by 2.1 points, their Coast 102 has a ZERO in that demo---a ZERO! And Monkey beats Coast 25-54 women by 2 whole points. Now, Fran, you call that stout?

Just pointing out the facts my dear, pointing out the facts.

Don't even get me started with WZNF. WHGO men 25-54 is double their #'s, in fact WZNF also posts a ZERO at night in key demo 25-54 men. 100kw station with a ZERO! Yup, stout.

Proving while some 12+ numbers might be higher, they can be deceiving when you dig in...

12+ is simply bragging rights. It's nice eye candy to be #1, but the real story is in the money demos. Especially in these rough economic times, REVENUE is more important than ratings in ANY demo. It's all about the money.

The Monkey's numbers are even more impressive when you consider the following:

1) "The Big Station" (WBLX/Mobile) lives up to it's name. They show in 4 markets, including Biloxi.

2) Based on what I observed when I lived on the Coast, WABB does well also. I would guess they have at least as many listeners in the Biloxi market as does WBLX. Of course, Dittman doesn't subscribe, so we'll never know for sure.

3) The Monkey's signal is severely compromised in the eastern portion of the market, due to it's relatively low power (2800 watts ERP) and transmitter location in Orange Grove. Pascagoula is part of the market, yet 107.1 starts to get "hairy" around the Gautier mall. East of there, you run into interference from 107.3/Pensacola.

I need to get down there so I can hear 'ZNF vs GO vs Coast 102. My guess is that Dowdy is trying to "tag team" GO with Classic Rock on one side and Classic Hits/Greatest Hits (the format formerly known as "Oldies") on the other. I haven't been on the Coast since Katrina, so I have no idea which is the better station. 105.9 was still WXRG when I left. But when I was there, Coast 102 always struck me as a station that could/should have been a lot more aggressive in terms of music, air personalities, processing, etc. Maybe they bulked up to protect their market when 105.9 flipped to Classic Hits (?) Not sure. Would be curious to hear what others have to say about this.

Just pointing out the facts. . . .

You want facts, eh? Triad has 100% of ALL listeners . . . on the AM band! Isn’t it fun playing with numbers? Check out Dowdy’s women 35-54, with HH income of +$50k. . . funner by the minute! Males 18-34, a little harder to peg because it can take 5-6 weeks before 30 guys are sampled. . . but hey, whose to know?

Of course, ratings were more important a while back. . . when people listened to radio and businesses bought advertising Glub.

If Dowdy is trying a tag team it is not working very well, nor do they appear to want to invest in their properties to compete.

Coast 102 has been pretty much status qou since you left. Same air talent, processing etc. etc. It is really hard for me to even define them as classic hits. Much of what I hear on 102.3 when I'm in town is pretty much there 60s/70s library with a light dusting of 'not so big' early 80s songs. Again it's pretty easy to see how apathetic Coast and Z95 are in even squeaking by with 0's in the ratings. Just like getting a 0 in school doesn't help a GPA, a 0 in the ratings is not going make it any easier on the sales side.

When I was there, 102 was still using "Oldies" as an identifier. I assumed they had transitioned to 70's based "Greatest Hits of All Time" or similar, as most former Oldies stations have done. Sounds like music-wise, they're still in the same place.

I remember listening to 102 and thinking "That station could be a major player here if they'd just tweak the music and turn up the energy level a bit."

The station I *really* enjoyed was WTIX-94.3. I know it's not the original "Tix the Tiger" on 690, but they tried to make it as authentic as possible with the original jingles, time chimes, etc. Tough to get from Ocean Springs with 94.5 next door, but I could hear it in the car most days.

Its no surprise to me and I was there for it. I was not aloud to do anything but time and temp for a morning show. Thats it. I was told that they just want music and time and temp. I got in trouble a few times for giving classic rock music news. They just dont care to know what a 42 year old man wants to listen to. And I can assure you its not a stupid blonde that giggles at giving the weather.
