began this morning with a vengeance. Austin, San Antonio, Victoria all like locals. This also wiped out almost all local HD reception. I really with they had thought more about the whole - "put the sidebands on adjacent frequencies" thing.

Which Victoria stations did you hear?

Just KTXN - I didn't have a lot of time to do a band scan.

KTXN is a deep fringe target, but do-able with an outdoor antenna from Houston. Since it is yet another Jack / Bob / whoever - I go for the much stronger KPBA 103.5 Austin. That is usually one of the strongest out of town signals. I have it on a preset in my car it is so strong.

Ever since KIXS downgraded I can no longer pick them up during a major skip. If that happens KQQK comes in mostly the HD signal, even with my antenna 20' up pointed towards Victoria, 30 miles away it will still pick up KQQK. That's why I started listening to KYKM because KIXS always gets override by KQQK after they downgraded. I use to listen to KIXS all the time.

Did KIXS downgrade their Kw? They are still showing 100Kw on radio-locator.com.

On the flip side, I can pick up 94-5 The Buzz in the mornings between Cuero and Victoria like a local. Once I get into Victoria, the signal fades.

They downgraded their Height to 505' it was almost 1,000' back in the day.

KIXS covered 90 square miles back in 2005; does the height reduction push them back to 60 square miles?

Also, why did KIXS reduce their height?

KIXS reduced antenna height to accommodate co-channel KQQK's increase. Also to note, co-channel KQLC-LP Brookshire moved off of 107.9 and to the non-comm band for the same reason. Not sure the mileage on KIXS anymore, but jras is right. It doesn't come close to covering the ground it once did. Kicks 108 used to show up in Houston quite frequently back then...now, you've got to be fairly close to El Campo before signs of KIXS appear.

Yep, back in the day When I was heading out to Lavaca county, I could start to get KIXS after I leave Lulling. It's funny how all of Victoria FM stations just get reduced to nothing. Back in the day KVIC use to be a power house also. Only strongest station around now in Victoria is their TV stations, that cover the area good.

You are so right jras. KVIC used to run the old co-channel KZZB-Beaumont out of town on pretty much any given day. I haven't heard a peep from KVIC in Houston in quite a few years. Same pretty much holds true for 98.7. When it was running Americana it was pretty reliable into Houston, but since it downgraded and relaunched as Jack it hasn't shown up here but once or twice in the last year. Still, if there's a Victoria station to be heard in Houston, you can bet that it will be 98.7.

KIXS reduced antenna height to accommodate co-channel KQQK's increase.

Why would a station agree to do that. Are they owned by the same company. What would be in it for KIXS?

OLD CHICAGO

Nothing good came out of it for KIXS. I can hardly pick them up even on a clear day. They get over powered mostly by KQQK's HD signal. I have heard it hurt them after they downgraded. I'm hearing much more advertizements on KYKM now that I use to hear on KIXS.

Is KIOX 96.1 any relation to the former incarnation at 96.9?

Not that I know of.

The format now plays classic country format, as the old 96.9 played the newer format. I still miss the old KIOX and KXGJ days.

No. The new ownership at 96.1 obviously knew the history of the IOX calls in and around the area and when they relaunched the station after a couple of years of silence from the previous ownership, they were lucky enough for Liberman to have abandoned the calls at the same time and they jumped on them. Timing was everything in this instance. No relationship between the two...except the KIOX call.
