Gullible Listeners Think 105.9 Is Counting Down To A Terrorist Attack!

All week long, former classic rock station 105.9 WHGO has been running an automated countdown clock, counting down to the new format, which will be unveiled at 3 PM today.

Apparently, some listeners are either have a very vivid imagination, are not radio-savvy, or are just plain uneducated. There are reports of some listeners who, upon hearing the countdown on 105.9 FM, believe that local industries such as Chevron or Northrop Grumman, are going to be blown up by terrorists at the conclusion of the countdown clock!

I mean, how dumb can you be?

Well, Mississippi ranks last in almost everything. We have some really stupid people here. This just underscores that fact.

People really need to mind their own business.

A few years back Police were called when WBOT 97.7 in Boston was running a similar countdown after Entercom bought the station from Radio One and was transitioning it from Urban Contemporary to a simulcast of Rocker WAAF.

Back in 2000 96.5 in Philly was running a countdown after they blew-up their long-time News-talk format counting down to a new All 80s Format. Cops were called then too.

In the late 70's WJDX ran a series of fake ads for Hiney Wine, it's purpose was to generate water-cooler talk and listener-awareness of the station. Very creative writing gave the campaign Red and Seymore Hiney, developers of the product, and distributed by the Hiney Refinery,in downtown Gluckstadt, next to the library(of which there is no downtown, nor does it have a library). The St. Paddy's Day Parade even featured our staff outfitted as a Hiney Wine Six-Pack. Was funny stuff, but made funnier by gullible people who thought it was real. Best part was when sales reps from other stations,tv, and outdoor called me for the contact info on the potential "client". Imagine a lot of time was spent by reps driving around Gluckstadt looking for and asking where they could find the Hiney Refinery.

In 1989, I was doing afternoons at a CHR in Bend, Oregon. It was my last day, so my replacement and I decided to have a little fun. He posed as a "guy off the street" who was coming in to take over my show without my knowledge. Borrowing a scene from the movie FM, I "locked" myself in the studio and refused to leave until my demands were met. I went by 'The Maniac' on-the-air, so I played a tape loop of the Michael Sembello song endlessly until management showed up to "tell me the truth about what was going on." It was very well done and generated a ton of talk on the streets.

Pretty soon, the POLICE showed up. They stated they had received "numerous calls" from concerned citizens who thought the DJ on Q-94 might be in some sort of trouble. Yep, they thought it was real. The newspaper even picked up the story and ran with it. You can't buy publicity like that! Back when radio was live and fun!
