Gunfire at KXTV, nobody hurt

WOLO here in Columbia SC recently set up shop, with their news studios, in a nondescript building that was formerly used by WZRB (whose transmitter is on the same property). They've got that place secured like Fort Knox, with a chain-link fence with barbed wire (!) and a security gate, with no identifying information on the building. But then again it's in kind of a sketchy neighborhood which is not safe after dark, they have staff coming and going, and several vehicles that are parked there.
That's almost surreal. I would expect precautions like those in a war zone, or in some 1980s future noir movie, where one side was using the facility to broadcast Orwellian propaganda and lived in constant fear of attacks from "the rebels."

Why didn't they just construct or rent a building in a part of town where their employees didn't have to come and go in armored trucks?

The location of ABC10 could always be worse. Just ask the folks who work at KCRA Channel 3, located in the beautiful north end of downtown off of 10th street.

Here's what it looks like. "Fort Knox" might have been a bit of literary hyperbole on my part, but the barbed wire and motorized security gate should speak for themselves. As I said, it's in kind of a sketchy neighborhood --- that part of town has a lot of crime --- so maybe they just perceived the need. There is no signage on the building, whereas at their former studios on Shakespeare Road (they may still some operations out of there, it's where their broadcast tower used to be), you can drive up and walk to the door freely, as I have done, IIRC I had something to deliver one time for my employer, stopped and talked to Dave Aiken while I was there. It was the old WZRB building and I'm assuming they got a good deal on the lease, and that studios were already in place.

Here is more on the incident since a hearing is scheduled for today and a possible motive is out there is being considered as a circumstance why KXTV Sacramento was targeted.

Jeeez. What cities are stations like those operating out of? Camden and Detroit?
The stations are operating in today’s America, where any whack job can carry guns because of his “God given Second Amendment rights.” Here in Texas even mentally ill people are allowed to purchase firearms. I’ve seen people waving around firearms around in the most irresponsible ways. It’s frightening.

Such an atmosphere makes you hesitant to deal with people you don’t know. As an example: During cooler months I usually get some exercise by briskly walking the neighborhood for an hour each morning. One time I walked past what appeared to be a service or delivery truck. The driver was slumped over the wheel. Was he having a health crisis, or just catching a nap before starting work? I thought of knocking on the window to see if he was okay…and then I reminded myself I was in gun nut Texas, and my concern might be met with a hail of bullets. I kept walking.

On another walk, where I was doing 90 minutes, I went past a parked pickup truck that had its engine running, but from a distance I couldn’t see anyone inside. As I loop the neighborhood a couple of times, I pass the truck again and its engine is still running. A third pass a short time later, same situation, the truck’s engine has been running for at least an hour and a half. I think about checking inside to make sure nobody is having a health crisis, but again remind myself that someone inside the truck or in the house that the truck is in front of could open fire, thinking someone was stealing their truck. Once again, I just walk by.

The problem with guns is not limited to certain cities and neighborhoods, it’s everywhere. When I was working an early shift at my station, and had to walk from my car to an employee entrance at 3am, I always moved swiftly before any nutbar with a grudge against the station (or the media in general) could take a pot shot at me. Same when I was leaving an evening shift.

Crazy people with guns are everywhere, and TV stations are an appealing target in the current political climate.

Note Ssacramento County and FBI agents have focused on a Manifesto written by the accused as a possible motive (Politically and conspiracy theories related) for the shooting at the Tegna Sacramento offices. Yes its from both the state and Federal hearings for the accused.
