Gunman in Burlington Mall....Or Not

After over an hour of nonstop coverage on WBZ, WHDH, WCVB, and even WFXT of an alleged gunman at the Burlington Mall, they just learned that the "rifle" was actually just an umbrella.

NECN had non-stop coverage too with their Chopper in the air.

I suspect that it was actually WCVB's chopper in the air (looking at nothing) and not NECN's.

I suspect it was WHDH's. NECN and WCVB have no relationship anymore after Hearst divested its share in the network. WHDH shares aerial footage with NECN.

Ah see, I did not know that. In the past, NECN borrowed quite a bit from WCVB. So, you learn something new every day - it's why I hang out here.

That was probably not the best thing that could happen to NECN as Hearst-Argyle has an excellent facility in Boston (WCVB), a good one in Manchester (WMUR) and up and coming ones in Portland, Burlington and Lebanon/WRJ. Those synergies used to provide them with good coverage across the region. I wonder how they are faring now.

That being said, until I checked Google, I thought the event happened at a mall in Burlington, Vermont (where they have a "Burlington Town Center Mall"), not Burlington, Massachusetts.

April Fool's Day has apparently arrived about three weeks late in New England.
