Guns n Roses on KROQ

Had a look at the KROQ playlist today, was shocked to see Guns N Roses "Welcome to the Jungle", and even a Metallica track among the playlist. Since when are these alternative? I'm not really sure why this would get airplay on a so called alternative station. Then I thought perhaps it's an LA thing? I know KROQ in the 80's did touch some AOR stuff..maybe it's a heritage throwback or something? I know here in Boston if G'N'R ever made it to our alternative station people would riot..they already have the "Butt rock" station across town for that stuff. What gives, KROQ? I guess the real question should be, does an alternative rock fan want to hear G'N'R sandwiched between Phoenix or The Offspring?

^L. A. doesn't have an Active Rock station, so I guess it makes sense that KROQ might try leaning that way, especially since KYSR is completely covering the Indie side of the Alternative format

KYSR plays a few GNR songs too. They played one of the new Metallica singles but it didn't last long. Always seems out of place to me on either station, but more on KYSR.

Indie side? I just checked and the last 5 songs were:
Big B- Sinner
The Cure- Lovesong
Social D- Machine Gun Blues
Green Day- When I Come Around
Weezer- Beverly Hills

To be fair, I see that the 8pm countdown hour has some "indie" tracks such as "Something to Die For" by The Sounds and Death Cab's new track, I also see Pumped Up Kicks, The Cave and Howlin' for You. But KROQ seems to have more indie tracks, I see they added Young the Giant (local LA band), Lykke Li and Adele to the playlist along with those other additions KYSR has jumped on as well.

A better question might be; Does an alternative rock fan really want to hear Nirvana every hour?

Does KCAL count at all? They seem to be an AOR station but they are way out in the IE.
L.A. does need a FT AOR station, to me KROQ will always be an alternative station, didn't they bill themselves as a punk/alternative station?

For much of the LA metro, KCAL can not be heard due to the co-channel 96.7 at Santa Ana, KWIZ.

I've never been able to pick up KCAL anywhere in the LA/OC Metro, heck! I barely pick it up when I'm in Ontario. I'm thinking you might get it in clearer reaching Riverside.
Same goes for trying to pick up KCXX 103.9 in the LA/OC area. I was able to pick it up in Chino, which is pretty close to Orange County.

Big B- Sinner
The Cure- Lovesong
Social D- Machine Gun Blues
Green Day- When I Come Around
Weezer- Beverly Hills

These are the Top 5 most played songs this week on KYSR...
1 - Florence & The Machine - Dog Days Are Over
2 - Mumford & Sons - The Cave
3 - Linkin Park - Waiting For The End
4 - Foster The People - Pumped Up Kicks
5 - Mumford & Sons - Little Lion Man

Also in the Top 40 on KYSR - Airborne Toxic Event, Death Cab, Neon Trees, Black Keys, Adele, Phoenix, Temper Trap, and MGMT

That's definitely the "Indie side" of the format

Let's see...Florence is on Universa/Republic...Linkin Park is on Warner Bros...Foster's working for Columbia...Mumford's home Glassnote is barely independent with Daniel's connections and its RED distribution. Will someone please explain to me what "indie" means? And if you say they all started on independent labels, I'll counter with, what band didn't? Oh and Mumford & Sons' droning grew tiresome really fast.

^"Indie" is what the 20-something and teen generation basically calls new folk-rock, light Alternative, or electronic-Alternative bands, many of which have been underground for the last five years or so

Mumford & Sons, Florence, Phoenix, Black Keys, Temper Trap, MGMT, Death Cab For Cutie, Foster The People, etc. are all "Indie" (even though they're all on major labels now)

Foo Fighters, Seether, Shinedown, and anything remotely Active-Rock or post-grunge sounding is Alternative, but not "Indie"

Oh...OK...so, it's more of a genre designation. What'll these dang whipper-snappers come up with next?

These days, "indie" is basically the term used for new alternative bands that actually belong on alternative radio, as opposed to Active Rock. I would hardly consider myself an indie kid or a hipster, but I like a lot of the music that gets lumped in with those movements, rightfully or otherwise.

That was the "indie" side 3-4 years ago. I am talking formatically AND the former station. All of those bands are very mainstream now. The old station never played Linkin Park because it was ultra commercial years ago. I had ATE play a show 4 years ago when like a few hundred people knew who they were. I like them and they are great peeps, but they are not so alternative anymore.

There's nothing "Indie" about KROQ's playlist...it's about as safe and predictable as you can get. KROQ reminds me of Jam'n 94.5 here in Boston...great ratings yet terrible playlist.

Guys, "Indie" (in 2011) means folk, light, or electro-Alternative - it has nothing to do with how "mainstream" the bands are
