Guns, Roses, and MY 102.5?

I imagine the people at CC Corporate would like to have the top 3 rankings they used to enjoy back in the "boring AC" days (before they screwed that up) rather than being #10 now. Losing ain't hip.
I found the reference to "flipping to Hot AC in July" quite interesting. That was so far from true Hot AC, and the station didn't even report as it until this year when they finally started to follow the Hot AC chart.

They did 93.3 a big favor. They no longer have to be 10th like they were for years. I think 102.5 will stay in 9th or 10th place with this format.

obviously doesn't have access to the trends. no one holds anyone to predictions here, but there might be a surprise.

WROQ has a few fixable problems, but I'm not really sure if The Planet can even be saved, before a format flip. Entercom actually pays some of the absolute worst on-air announcers that I have had the displeasure to hear. The playlist is that of bands that sound like a...
Constipated Cookie Monster.
At present, they are in 10th place, with the PD responsible still sqeaking-out a paycheck.
MAGIC...Boobed(again), and fired their Morning team, without anyone "on deck".
Here is a bit of hope for MY, if their decission maker could read the following:
I side with two good decissions: The Format Flip, and the Delilah Dump. However, you botched the Flip, after that. Here's the save: Hire three seasoned Air Talents, and "Pump it" Live.
The only hope for a save is Live Air Talent. Many of you may not agree with me, but
at Status Quo,...it is a blatant failure!

Happy to see MY adding Grouplove's "Tongue Tied" to its playlist as well as Ellie Goulding's "Lights" (which I suspected they would).

Still doing well with the adds. We'll see if it makes a difference in the long run.

First off, awp69...always aware, and correct. I'd like to add just one thought here, and that is:
Adding new songs is a +positive, but I firmly believe that you can not entertain, and sell these songs to the mindset of the listeners, without Live Air Talent. I realize that it costs money, but you have to spend, in order to make. Also, the Bean Counters need to re-do their math. A full time Air staff is a standard part of the yearly operating cost. Severing the legs...holds you still!

I think MY 102.5 is alright. I wish I could say good, but those 80s songs - "These Dreams" by Heart, "Oh Sherrie" by Steve Perry, "Missing You" by John Waite, "Edge Of Seventeen" by Stevie Nicks, "What I Like About You" by The Romantics, any AC/DC, Pat Benatar, Michael Jackson, OMD, Cutting Crew, Simple Minds, Madonna, Prince, Mellencamp, Journey, etc. from that era just irritate me, on that station. 90% of Hot AC's have abandoned the 80s entirely and cut back on the 90s.... and MY needs to as well. One Direction in to AC/DC? Terrible.

98.9 and 97.7 cover the 80s just fine. Instead of playing the 80s, fill those slots with more new music. Play new songs more often, and don't wait so long to put stuff in to heavy rotation. I think a more pop CHR'ish approach to Hot AC, like many larger markets are seeing, would do better in this market. Perfect example: Star-94 Atlanta. Very current focused, and upbeat. Killer numbers, too. They have a very "clean" sound - very little from before 2000. The absence of the older stuff makes an amazing difference. http://beta2.star94.com/broadcasthistory.aspx

Guess it's a crap shoot with MY. I've heard very little 80s lately. Definately less than prior to March, but I agree should just toss them completely. Star 94 in Atlanta is a great example. I skip around quite a bit still, but only time I actually remember thinking 'WTF' once in the last week or so was hearing REO Speedwagon earlier today. Otherwise, it's be mostly currents with some 90s and 00s mixed in (Tonic, Blink 182, Green Day, Daughtry, Matchbox 20). Don't know why they still feel the need to put an 80s song every now and then.

I'm not sure as to what MY is calling, labeling...this whatever format. However, to me, it just seems as/like a struggling CHR, minus all the worthless Hip-hop garbage, but still allowing an occassional worthless Country-crossover record. Concidering some of the recent songs getting airplay, it smacks of a "It Tested Well"....Clear Channel paid for....hemroidal Consultant driven,
...(do we dare say it?)...the Consultant's crutch,...Auditorium Music Test.

Well after listening a bit more of the past few days, I have to say maybe carolinaradio is right. I have noticed a bit of an uptick in the '80s songs they play.

I don't think they know what the hell they're doing. When it seemed a light bulb suddenly went on in March, their playlist and new adds seemed to finally truly reflect Hot AC. And now they're regressing towards that sloppy mix that doomed the flip to begin with.

Maybe it's not quite as bad as they were last year and I don't mind some of the more rock oriented '80s. But things like Michael Jackson, Heart and Journey's slower songs (ala "Open Arms") have no business on Hot AC.

Don't know if they saw the trends and thought with the earlier bump they got when they first made the flip that maybe they need to take a few steps back? To me that bump was just people checking it out, the decline since then, IMO, was probably BECAUSE of the mess they made of things at the beginning.

They're still doing fairly well with keeping up with the new music, but adding back those songs that just suck the life out of the generally upbeat playlist is probably just going to hasten their demise.

Don't try to walk on both sides of the fence. Make a decision and stick with it!

Since I can't edit my earlier posts (really annoying that they don't give longer for editing), just thought I'd give an example. In the last hour, they've played the Outfield, Don Henley and Michael Jackson. Prior to this week, it seemed to be down to maybe one '80s song every two hours. Definately regressing.

At work so...back to streaming Radio 104.5.

They are definitely still playing around 2 80s songs an hour. In the 5pm hour they played The Eurythmics and Pat Benatar. Really? What's with the Benatar fascination? I notice more 80s in the afternoon than in the morning, when very little is played. They don't play any 80s after 7pm.

At least they aren't playing those horrendously out of place 70s songs that they were playing after the flip and Delilah is gone. Remember "Maggie May", "Boogie Shoes", "Your Song?" "Brown Eyed Girl?" I agree that the transition was absolutely botched. And they even ADMITTED that was supposed to be Hot AC. LOL. It's still a lot better than a year ago though. I remember they went 2 months with no new adds and very few "fresh" songs. They wouldn't even play OneRepublic's "Good Life." I doubt we would be hearing stuff like Neon Trees, One Direction, Carly Rae Jepsen, or LMFAO. At least now their rotation of currents is in line with the Hot AC chart.

If the station is targeted towards women in their 30s that want newer music, the youngest was born in '82, oldest in '72. How do they rationalize Pat Benatar, The Romantics, J. Geils Band, Michael Jackson, Journey? She was either not born when those came out, or in elementary/preschool. That's exactly why Hot AC's have abandoned the decade. The 80s have aged out of the target. If I want mainly older stuff with some new stuff, I'm listening to Magic....if I want mostly new stuff without rap, I want...exactly that. I'm failing to see how most of the 80s fit in with what the goal is here. Star 94 in Atlanta is a perfect example of a station for thirtysomething women. It gets them, too.

i can't wait till the 12+ numbers are released and posted next week. the thread here will actually be worth reading and insightful.

Nobody's making you read it. ;)

The spring book is going to be released to the public on 7/17 according to the Arbitron schedule. I won't make any predictions, but I won't be surprised if MY does well, but won't be if it doesn't. Poor programming doesn't always mean poor numbers in this market. Look at 93.3 and 98.9. I will admit that 102.5 still sounds better than both.

both sides of the fence makes you a politician.

Wow...this morning 102.5 played "Sexy & I Know It" by LMFAO, "Tik Tok" by Ke$ha, and "Lose Yourself" by Emimem, among other things. That's even hotter than a lot of Hot AC's. Props to them for keeping it interesting.

Yeah, and at least when I was listening, their venture in into the 80s -- "Love Song" by The Cure -- at least sounded better in the mix than the Pat Benatar and Michael Jackson of late.

I was a little surprised when I heard "Gold Digger" by Kanye West when I got in the car today. I had to double check that it was on MY. I also heard "Love The Way You Lie" by Eminem and Rihanna earlier.

Their evolution over the past year has certainly been interesting. Having known of MY for so many years, it's still funny to hear a lot of the stuff they've played in the last year on there. They played Elton John and the Little River Band for so long.

I heard Gold Digger too and was really shocked by that one. To me that almost sounded too out of place even on Hot AC. Seems like they've opened the flood gates and are seeing what sticks or making a last ditch effort to save the station.

i try to keep an open mind on radio. i dont listen but i know that elton john and little river band are old school its good they changed to play music for the kids.

They really do seem to be throwing everything but the kitchen sink in there now. Almost like Chuck with the focus being mainly new music with a bit of 80s and some 90s in there. Very strange transition today from Bruno Mars' "Grenade" to Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit".

Definately keeping things interesting. But it also kind of scares me that they may know something we don't. I remember when 103X knew it was going to fold, the last few weeks they played EVERYTHING. Totally off the wall alternative and deep tracks you'd never hear (and a few unedited that they shouldn't have been playing from what I remember). Hope this isn't one of those "Well, we're going to bite the dust so mind as well go down swinging" type things.
