I was trying to figure out why WEAE was getting the best ratings it ever has.

Obvious answer- Steelers- and that's why WBGG did it's best book, too.

But there is another reason why WEAE has improved and I think it is Junker.

Junker is the station's concience. I felt 1250 had gotten unlistenable with its attack style and basically every host doing the same thing- Mark Madden- Eddy Crowe-Tim Benz.

All sarcastic. All rude. All insulting.

When he first came on the air- Madden was shocking and fresh because unlike Rocco Pendola- who paved his way- Madden knew Pittsburgh and where to make his points and take his shots.

The problem is after 10 years he's predictable and transparent- as well as usually just flat out wrong.

Yet everyone was trying, in their own little way, to be him. Even the 60 second commentaries had gotten tremendously weak- I remember Joe Destio trying to put down a Pitt basketball win by bringing up Brady Quinn.

Huh?

Except Junker. Finally he no longer had to live in Stan Savran's shadow and is actually the only responsible voice on there.

He makes his points so well that Eddy Crowe's barbs usually fail. Okay Ed- we know you think people in Alabama and Uniontown are one and the same and not very bright- way to go Eddy- you just stole "Redneck Headlines" from Benz. HOW ORIGINAL!!!!

Perhaps Crowe's shallow sarcasm has allowed Junker to have this rebirth in his career, because it only serves to make Junker come out so well and as "the smart one."

That and the fact they are running unopposed in that time slot.

Junker has become the Knight in Shining Armor for responsibility on that station.

It really had become the same old same old and unlistenable and the ratings were showing before Junker got on there.

And what is truly remarkable is that generally talk show hosts in middle age after the high-profile hardships Junker has been in do not return to the station they left 20 years ago to stardom.

Crowe's smart-ass asides work best in a DVE-like environment, where they touch on sports but don't obsess about it.

Benz is consumed with promoting himself as a babe magnet. I don't think he's had any impact, despite getting frequent TV appearances on KDKA's Sunday night show.

I'll tell you something else that's happened with Madden. He's been exposed as someone who doesn't know sports. He follows hockey religiously but doesn't know squat about the NFL, baseball or college basketball. He has the same hatred/resentment of the Steelers that a lot of hockey fans do and that clouds his judgment. After the Steelers were 6-10, he kept saying the Pens would be in the postseason before the Steelers were. The Steelers went 15-1 and followed that with a Super Bowl. The Pens have been awful. He kept saying Jerome Bettis was finished, and Bettis gave the Steelers two more good seasons. He made a big deal last year that Roethlisberger was disliked by teammates. It doesn't seem to have had a negative effect.

The question is how much longer do you think WEAE will put up with Madden. There has to be a good replacement for him.
 
Madden

Mark Madden was also one of the few people to attempt to take pro wrestling seriously. This might not be well known among sports fans, but among pro wrestling fans Madden was very well known. He was also regarded as a joke for his attempts at being a "serious" pro wrestling "journalists". If you look into old pro wrestling sites, there still might be some old information about "Mark the mark". (aside, among pro wrestlers, the fans are called "marks".)

I would say he's vulnerable just because he's making pretty good money. They can get another show in there for less (maybe even Junker and Crow), and it probably wouldn't cost them ratings or revenue.

When he signed his last deal, they had high hopes of breaking him out on TV. He had a commentary segment on the Channel 4 news, but that didn't last long. He has no outside promotional value because the P-G and City Paper both dumped his column. He's on that Sunday night show on Channel 4, but that finishes a distant second to the Channel 2 show when they go head-to-head. Madden had some national Sunday exposure on ESPN, but that ended and they run a NASCAR show in that slot now.

My guess is they'll play hardball when his contract comes up for renewal. If they can keep him, fine, but I don't think they'll sweat it that much if they don't.

I think fox sports 970 is pretty good. And i heard madden just a little bit ago and man he's mean. I wished FSN pittsburgh on tv would put foxsports radio on there.

As a listener, I would like to see WEAE make a change in the 3-7pm slot. How about bringing someone in like John Steigerwald on. I know he's on KDKA but I think he would do very well on his own radio show. He's old school but knows a lot about all kinds of sports.
 
No, Steigy is viewed as too much of an old-school curmudgeon to do such a show. He used to have one on WBGG and it had on lots of guests from the past- lots of good guests from the past- but very few contemporary ones.

I Guess Mark Madden's ratings are consistantly good supposely because everyone wants to see what he will say or do next. It kind of reminds me of Simon from American Idol. lol. I don't know about you but I am really sick and tired of hearing him rant about the slots license and the new Penguin Arena not getting done. I agree that WEAE will play hardball with Madden when his contract is up. I would show him the door and thank him for his services that are no longer needed. I would even consider bringing Paul Alexander on board. He is pretty good in my opinion. Who do you think would be a good replacement for Mark if they decided to show him the door?
 
The question is after this last book there has to be some question as to how much Mark Madden is worth.

You mentioned you were getting tired of his stuff. I think we all are. It is time for him to reinvent himself- because unlike what a previous poster wrote- he does have good sports knowledge.

His whole radio career has been giving us the "against the grain" opinion. I think sometimes it has been called for- why Jim Leyland was revered when his contribution was very little- why Neil O'Donnell was never embraced even though he was an All-Pro and the best QB the Steelers had for a generation.

Sometimes it was not- his criticisms of the character of Jerome Bettis and Willie Stargell come off much worse on him than Bettis or Stargell.

Now, if he could get one more "against the grain" and give us the sports news with a smile and not a frown- he could be bigger than he ever was and still keep the entertainment quotient.

I'll tell you- if Madden were to be axed (and he's been axed from a LOT of places)- they may have already been putting something into place.

Junker and Crowe in mid-day would probably draw just as many numbers. Then we'll move the new night show to the morning hour- or just go with Colin Cowherd.

Or, you could develop a new talent from wherever. For instance-

Hire Joe Bendel and you'll get the slob share Madden gets.

Hire Rob Rossi and you'll get the "tune in to hear what he says next"

Hire Rocco DeMaro- who is beginning to grow on me- and you'll keep the energy (DeMaro is no Madden but he is intelligent and his enthusiasm makes one WANT to listen to the show).

All of those guys would come in for a fraction of what they are currently spending and will probably have to spend to keep Junker and Crowe in the future.

A fired Madden would be wounded, but not down and out. He has enough going on outside of his radio gig to get by on, and then I wouldn't at all be surprised if he were to somehow wind up on WBGG.

And then a real war begins!

If Madden were out of the picture, 1250 would just move Junker and Crow into that slot. They already have a nice audience in a less attractive time slot. The station could either take programming for their old spot off the satellite or let a new show develop there. This experimentation with "sports night" makes me wonder if they're not looking for another show that might develop from within.

Alexander is an absolute zero. No personality at all, no excitement. He tried to become more of a hot talk guy in his last days at KD and that failed, too.
 
Madden does not have a good understanding of sports because he's too lazy to get out and work, and he has no background in covering anything other than hockey. He was a high school writer at the P-G.

His judgments get clouded by the personal issues he has with people. He started slamming Bettis only because Bettis cancelled an appearance on his show after finding out KDKA had an exclusive with him. So he extrapolates that into Bettis is over the hill, the Steelers should get rid of Bettis, etc. Last year his big rant was that Roethlisberger was getting a big ego and teammates didn't like him. If it's true, it didn't keep them from winning the Super Bowl. On another site, someone posted links to all the terribly incorrect stuff he had written in his P-G columns over the years.

Madden will never get good information because he doesn't listen. It's always all about him.

Bendel has no broadcast skills at all. Rossi auditioned for both radio and TV and flopped badly at both.

What does Madden have going on outside the radio show? Writing articles for the Penguins programs?

OK, I thought you meant something else in the media biz. So this is like Bob Logue helping his son run a Dairy Queen in his spare time, or Goose Goslin selling real estate in his off hours.
