Guy Mainella, WBZ Sports Talk host

I was an occasional -- and annoying, no doubt -- caller to "Calling All Sports" in its early years (my early teens). He was very tolerant of kids like me who'd want to discuss pro wrestling or propose ridiculous trades for the Red Sox. Good memories for me, indeed, even putting up with 10 to 15 minutes of busy signals on 254-5678 just to get through.

Long after they stopped using 254-5678 on the air, the number still worked. It was the second number on the call queue after 254-1030. It's also the start of the long string of digits I will throw at you if you visit my house and ask for the Wi-Fi password ;)

Guy Mainella was part of an all-star lineup on WBZ that included legends such as Carl DeSuze, Dave Maynard, Jerry Williams, Larry Glick, et al. Smart, witty, and highly engaging, he made Calling All Sports a program that even a casual follower of sports could enjoy. Alack, Mr. Mainella did not achieve the same level of success with his subsequent call-in show, The World of Guy Mainella.

That is what I remember him as, the political/current events evening talk show host—the precursor to David Brudnoy & Dan Rea.
And what I remember most from his show is the frequent use of the naughty word dump button, with that 5-10 second "woooo-woowww-wwoongggg" sci-fi sound effect! 😎

On "Calling All Sports," the bleeping was done with a bouncy jingle that went "Boston ... W Beeee Zeeee ... Boston ... W Beeee Zeee ..." for 10 seconds or so, until the caller was off the line.

"dump button,"
Don't forget there was no caller-ID then. If you try that now (on what few talk shows exist) they know where it's coming from.

Also Guy's intro sampled Spector/Turners "River Deep".
The Bruins were the mega subject of the show. For a long time wall to wall Espo, Orr discussion, year round.
# one note that one of Guy's BZ contemporaries Bob Raleigh passed away a few years ago and I don't know if it was mentioned.

Most call-in hosts I've heard prefer not to hear their name posed as a question at the start of a call, and not to be asked, thereupon, how they are. Guy Mainella's responses in such situations almost never varied from the following:

GM: "Good evening, you're on Calling All Sports."
Caller: "Guy?"
GM: "Right."
Caller: "How are you, Guy?"
GM: "Terrific."
