Gym Class Heroes hot AC?

This morning as I was getting ready for school I was listening to our local hot AC and heard Stereo Hearts by the Gym Class Heroes. Does this belong on hot AC? I figured since most hot AC stations edit the wrap out of DJ Got Us Fallin in Love by Usher, I wouldn't expect them to touch a song like Stereo Hearts.

Our Hot AC here in Columbus, OH (WVMX/Mix 1079) plays:

GCH - Stereo Hearts
LMFAO - Party Rock Anthem
David Guetta/Usher - Without You
Katy Perry - The One That Got Away
Cobra Starship/Sabi - You Make Me Feel

They also played the rap version of Tonight with Enrique and at one time was spinnin' the hell out of S&M by Rihanna. What's your local Hot AC?

GCH has history on Hot AC with Cupid's Chokehold. This song "Stereo Hearts" adds familiarity with a core artist like Adam Levine, and, to be honest, its very light "rap."

Good fit on the more tempo driven Hot AC's.

Our hot AC is KPLZ, and the playlist you mentioned above looks like them, except for Rihanna and Enrique. It actually does fit quite well.

There's nothing wrong with Hot ACs playing wrap - but there is something wrong with people not knowing how to spell wrap

KPLZ is really an Adult Top 40 though.

Hot AC is becoming more rap friendly, and Stereo Hearts mixes in a familiar Hot AC core artist. No-brainer crossover.

This is one of those songs which teeters into the territory of songs such as Everlast's "What It's Like," which are rap-based but not so hard that your core Hot AC listeners will tune out. Would it reach your top power category? Doubtful. But no reason not to bypass it completely.

Are the wraps they edit more hardcore than the wrap in Gym Class Heroes? I don't get why they edit the songs I mention in my original post and then pick up a song like this.

Playing the edited version of a song like "DJ Got Us Fallin' In Love" really comes down to the preference of the programmer or the person(s) overseeing on-air content. There isn't a de facto standard to determine what rap-based songs make it through and which ones don't. Hot AC is a chameleon format which can be remarkably different from market to market, so just because the specific station you're referencing is doing it this way doesn't mean that's what is happening across the format as a whole.

That makes sense. However, it doesn't make sense to me that the same station would pick up a song but edit the wrap, yet pick up a mostly wrap track and leave it as is. WQSM is another one that does this with the songs mentioned already, and they occasionally play Bad Meets Evil. My philosophy on this is if you're going to play wrap songs, leave the wrap parts in on the non-wrap songs as well.

CC Hot AC KDMX in Dallas plays a lot of CHR/Pop product lately..I've heard Nelly, Gym Class Heroes, BOB, LMFAO, Cobra Starship..kinda surprises me since we also have CC KHKS 106.1 that also plays all of that music..But I like the adult top 40 sound a lot more lately

The only reason for playing the non-rap version of a track is competition in the market... Or, angling against a sister station. Hot AC coming up against a CHR/M, for example. Or Hot AC vs Hot AC.

What's fascinating is how adult and alternative pop-rock leaning our KMXP is, yet occasionally, they'll randomly throw in "boom boom pow" by Black Eyed Peas. They also have this funny version of "airplanes" by B.O.B. where it's like someone tried to edit out all or most of the wrap in it.

Hmm, I've heard the edit you describe on KSTP as well. Our other modern AC will occasionally throw in stuff like that. They'll be leaning alternative AC, then throw in something like Stereo Love, or Hello by Martin Salva and Dragonet.

What I've heard from a bunch of Hot AC programmers is that they need to throw in some semi-rhythmic tracks to break up the lite-Alt rock stuff, otherwise they sound outdated

I feel like Star 94 is pretty careful to alternate between pop and Alt/Rock every other song
