Had Twitter Existed In 1963......

On their website this weekend (November 22nd-25th),. CBS News is using a Twitter feed to allow visitors to see how the news division may have used Twitter, had it existed then, to "tweet" updates on the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

You can find the feed at https://twitter.com/CBSPolitics/jfk50 .

It's interesting to look at.

Seems very cool to me. Wonder what it would be like with Facebook? Probably 200 million people posting their grief at the same time, I wonder if Facebook's network server would crash...

I mentioned to a friend that Twitter would've exploded if it existed in 1963. Too bad I'm just now seeing CBS's "live" tweets. I think it was NASA that did something similar during the anniversary of the Apollo 11 lunar landing. There was also an account that retold the Titanic sinking, however it wasn't that good because most of the posts were ironic.

Also...imagine if YouTube and today's cameras were also around in '63; instead of just Abraham Zapruder's, there would've been HUNDREDS of videos of the assassination from various angles.

I also wonder what would happen if cable networks were around in 1963 like they are today. I would suppose it would be like 9/11. All the news channels would go 24/7 for days (like CNN and Fox), many general entertainment networks would join CNN, Fox, CBS etc., and some channels would display a still message and/or music (like what Food Network did on 9/11 with the somber piano music), and instead of saying "Our thoughts and prayers go to the families" - it would be "Our thoughts and prayers go to the President and his family"...

And of the grassy knoll...

Hundreds of videos on YouTube almost immediately. On the downside, all the political factions would be on Twitter and Facebook screaming at each other and blaming the other party or philosophy. CBS's refined coverage included poetry readings, masses, orchestra performances and documentaries in addition to breaking news coverage. Now it would be fast-paced with a lot of repetition....but in 1963 there wasn't as much ability to go live from various places. There have been several historical Twitter accounts including for the 100th anniversary of the Titanic sinking.

Of course, there was the embarrassing story about how some teenagers (and perhaps older) didn't realize that the Titanic actually sank, and were under the impression the movie was just a made-up love story.
