Hagerstown Radio

Wanted to see what everyone's thoughts were about radio in the Hagerstown market.
I personally like what the folks at Wild 96.7 have done with the format.
Station sounds good!

Asking our opinions is what the whole thread is about.

One of the things that makes radio so interesting is that each station is different, and usually the product of individual executives, managers, programmers & air-talents. No cookie-cutters.

Y'all do what you do with your stations for reasons that make sense to you, even if they don't make sense to us on the other side of the speakers.

So radioexec wanted to know what we thought, and asked for input, and we responded.

But don't expect us to respond with a carbon copy of your ideas. Those are your ideas. Our take is gonna be different.

Sure, everybody has an opinion, that's fine. You just seemed misinformed. Many people many make comments on a market based solely on ratings they see on-line, what's happened elsewhere or personal preference. Sometimes, the ratings source doesn't even correctly attribute the right format to the right station. Without actually hearing a market for more than a day, you can't accurately comment.

Many programming decisions have been made based on "What seems right" on paper. We're all guilty of it. Here are two examples: In Harrisburg, a class B FM was flipped to mainstream AC twice in 15 years because no one else was doing it and hence there was a "hole in the market" for the format. Twice this format failed. Funny thing is, it was the same owner who did it both times! Secondly, In Hagerstown it seemed there was "a hole for another country station". In short, for various reasons there was not. But even after four years in the format new owners opted to re-launch the station because of the "perceived hole". You guessed it, it also failed again.

There are a lot of programming "geniuses" out there who've never set foot in a radio station ;)

For what it's worth, I'm not misinformed

Mistaking WIKZ as a mainstream AC and having the wrong call letters on Wild (WDLD) made it appear that you didn't have all the correct facts. That's all...nothing personal :)

I've been involved in this long enough to understand--as you do--that the differences between variations of AC are often in the ear or the mind of the programmer. I regularly flip back and forth between WINC, WIKZ, WRQX, & WWMX in my travels, and among the bunch, WIKZ sounds slightly more conservative and slightly more oldies-based to my ear. But I'll take your word for it.

You fill out the Arbitron format forms. They list WIKZ as an AC--and WINC/WRQX & WWMX as Hot AC, don't they? So if you're a Hot AC, why tell Arbitron otherwise?

And nobody knows the calls on 96.7--or cares. They're used once an hour in a hurried ID. And I'm guessing that's intentional. You want people to know it as "Wild," not WDLD. Gimme a break!

Hey, look. Sorry to bother you, man. Again, congratulations on a nice book.
