Hail & Farewell: Dana Jewell leaves WDEV

O.K. I admit it. I'm a bit behind going through some of the accumulating newspapers here before I use them to start my woodstove. But I have not seen notice on this board of Dana Jewell's leaving WDEV after a ten-year span. His replacement, according to the article in a recent "SevenDays", which caught my eye before it went into the firebox, is Jon Noyes, a sportscaster of note. Here's wishing the best to Mr. Jewell.

Dana Jewell… One of the good ones... and future VAB Hall of Famer!

Anyone remember "back in the day," when DEV was a top 40 station? Even reported their current music to the trades. I think Jack Donovan was PD/MD. Is he still there? It was probably in the late 70's or early 80's. Bruce Stebbins was MD, maybe even PD of SKI at about the same time.

Exactly what IS their format these days? I'll sometimes give them a listen while driving along I-93 coming home from the White Mts. When there's no ball game or nascar race on sometimes they'll be playing oldies, other times AC, another time AAA-ish stuff. I'm still waiting for polkas.

WDEV has never been Top 40 and never would be as long as Ken Squier owns it.

I suspect that Jack D was just looking to improve record service at that time.

As for what they are: It is "Full Service," but Variety would apply. 'DEV has always been about news and sports, with a very eclectic music product. Ken Squier loves jazz so jazz has been in the mix since he returned from BU in the late 50s(?). Radio Vermont is just unique. They aren't really formatted but they are predictable.

"Music To Go To The Dump By" is not to be missed if you're within their footprint on a Saturday morning.

Some great air talent has gone through there. The most notable of whom are of course Mr. Squier of CBS/NASCAR fame, Chip Hobart (CKLW/WRKO/WPOP), Jay Morrill of WNEW/WASH, John Irving (WRC), and prominent the great Brian Harwood.

Though I would consider myself among the least-distinguished of alums, I am proud to say that I began my career at WDEV. Whatever I became I owe a lot to the experience. WDEV is was and I hope will always be the essence of regional radio and the true definition of variety.
