Haiti help but keep EYE on US

The last time disasters struck, 1) the terrorist attack of 9/11 and 2) Hurricane Katrina - We as Americans gave very generously.. billions of dollars flowed into these areas but unfortunately, a lot of money never get to its destination.

I believe it was either the United Way or the American Red Cross that held back money from victims of 9/11 and then made them jump through hoops to receive any. With Katrina, corrupt nonprofit organizations/possibly government led to way in preventing funds from reaching the victims.

We have another disaster of monumental proportion. As managers and owners of radio stations, we need to be responsible in offering recommendations of giving. The church I attend sent a group of people down to help with Katrina victims and I must tell you, the devastation was unbelievable and with all the money people gave through large nonprofit organizations, the situation should have been made much better. It was thru churches that people were most helped.

Unless you're giving the money to Haiti thru faith based organizations, its unlikely your money will reach the poor & needy -better to give to a local church and allow them to help homeless locally and allow them to give directly to churches to Haiti.

Remember, Haiti has had no infrastructure for two hundred years. The most structured organizations are the Catholic church and the international organizations like the Red Cross who bring in volunteers who are not part of the system.

There is a huge and not exaggerated presence of animism and its offshoots in the "nonaffiliated" religions, and there is no control over the churches, ministers and such. Having been in Haiti, and despite having lived in the "Third World" much of my life, I can say that the lack of any kind of orgainization is frightening.

Stick with the Red Cross and, perhaps, your own church group as long as the church will send its own people to help. Once money gets into the local system, it disappears.
