I've been meaning to comment on this for a while, but Hal Brown was the first radio personality I ever met in person.
I think it was in 10th grade, 1973-74, and he came to a career day at my high school. I lived way out in Westmoreland County and although I was a big radio fan, I had never heard of WAMO. To my knowledge, they weren't on FM yet, and we were way out of range for 860.
But I'll never forget him. Clean cut, professional and very friendly, he talked about the industry and played an awesome aircheck for us. I was hooked at that very moment.
This points out what has become of the Urban format in modern times. Hal, Del King, John Anthony and the like were true pros who were admired by the community, not just fast-taking street kids.
Thank you very much, Mr. Brown, as you enjoy your final rest. If not for you, I might have missed out on one of the great joys of my life.
