HALL FOR SALE??

Found this under the Vermont section.

Heard Hall is making changes to the morning shows everywhere, they blew out their Providence stations Morning show and one of the announcers had been with them for 10 years. Smart move the station is number one. Heard the morning show wanted a small raise. I notice their consultant Dan Hill has been asking for input on the WOKO Morning show on the web site. Heard they may update the WOKO morning show??? A friend of mine works there and the station management won't give anyone a raise and just talks down to them. Amazing because the station has made millions for the Hall's....they just keep cashing the checks. Jimmy lane the morning show and pd has been demoted to save money at wcty in norwich, ct. Will Hall to Cumulus? I heard a sale is in the works. Why are so many radio companies so greedy.

Arthur Rowbutham, president of Hall Communication has been struck with parkenson diesese...rumor has it it he doesn't like the cold and wants to sell the Providence, Norwich and Plattsburgh stations, it's been a long time since anyone has seen him at the stations. I think they do a good job...but no one in thier family wants to take over. A shame since it was a good family group. The children just want to cash to checks and liquidate. Saw an ad for new morning shows in Providence, Norwich and Plattsburgh....oh well

I heard the same thing Will. The kids want nothing to do with Radio.

The more interesting part of this is Cumulus to buy Hall? What a turn around that will be in the building and on the street. How are they going to spin that in the business community since they have been bad mouthing the Burlington Clear Channel group for years as the big bad corporate owner? I guess what goes around comes around.

Relax...Hall is not selling their stations. I've spoken with someone "near the top" and if anything, they're looking to grow. As for the firing of the Providence morning show...I don't know why it happened. WOKO's morning show won't be going anywhere. That's the danger of rumors. People get carried away with - and thrive - on negative info on other stations.

Pliff
don't be stupid I know you have connections...but I worked for a group and the rumor mill was spreading and everyone asked the owner about selling. He even took us out for a drink and swore he would never sell. He had signed the papers that morning. I was mad, but after a year I ran into him...he said he had to lie because he had signed a non-disclosure agreement and it would blow his multi-million dollar deal...same is true with Hall. In fact, in the mid 90's they had WCTK for sale with a broker...oh I know it's true because I have the actual
offering from the broker. No one ever bought it....because the kids were to greedy. If a station told everyone it was for sale sales people and on air talent would run like mice for the doors, thus deflating the value of the assets. When was Arthur Rowbothom in the building last? Providence, New London and Burlington are up for sale... I only hope that it goes to a community driven group. Time will tell.

I partially agree with you on this one. When Hal Close (then-owner of WPNH) was offering folks tours of the station, that can only mean one thing. (Well, at least when you never see the man at any other given time.) I knew then that time was short, but I would have hung in there until the end (and take a roll of the dice at convincing the new crew to keep me on), if they hadn't reduced my hours so I couldn't make rent. (This they could legally do because I, like a dumbass, decided "hourly" which was offered as a part-time slot was a better choice than "salary" so that I didn't get screwed (< word substitution for more appropriate but highly offensive stereotypical soundalike word) and work ungodly hours for no additional pay.)

However, I don't think the sales staff should be quick to jump ship. In the previous case, all of the sales staff were retained and given the ability to sell more stations in a package deal.

The airstaff was very quickly canned, however. :'(

RadioWomen, you don't know what you're talking about. Mr Rowbotham was in Burlington two weeks ago, and was also there in May. Check your facts.

Rowbothams own a house on the shore of Naragansett, RI that they just remodeled in the last few years. They spend each Summer there.

Sources close to ownership deny categorically any sale by Hall to Cumulus or anyone else. In fact, Hall is looking to grow rather than sell. The family "patriarch" is not terminally ill. He looked pretty lively during his recent station visits. His children regularly attend the annual Hall Sales Seminar. They seem committed to the family business. As for Hall being just another greedy company, you may want to check out their health package. Full timers get their insurance paid in full less $20 bucks a month. That includes a presciption drug plan with no deductible, no co-pay--no kidding! Hall is not perfect, but those are some of the facts of life at Hall.

Amazing how this has grown from a "Hall is making changes from their morning show" thread to a "Hall is selling to Cumulus" thread.

It is truly mind boggling how the rumour mill gets cranking!

"Heard the morning show wanted a small raise."
"Heard they may update the WOKO morning show"
"A friend of mine works there and the station management won't give anyone a raise and just talks down to them."
"Jimmy lane the morning show and pd has been demoted to save money at wcty in norwich"
"I heard a sale is in the works."
"rumor has it it he doesn't like the cold and wants to sell "
"The children just want to cash to checks and liquidate."
"No one ever bought it....because the kids were too greedy."

Holy mackerel! Could I have a side order of fries with all that innuendo, conjecture and opinion?

How about a fact or two to back it up? "A friend of mine works there..." How about a name? "I heard a sale is in the works." From whom?

Ouija board or Magic Eight Ball....just what are your sources?

Sounds like someone's got an axe to grind. Did someone at Hall gore your ox?

All right! Two newbs in the same thread! It's like Christmas on here today!

I guess you haven't been lurking here for long. This is Radio-Info. We don't do names (except for myself, because I don't care, and Manno, because he's cool and doesn't trash people.) The business is too small.

You're absolutely correct. The business IS small, but the unfounded, unsubstantiated comments required some type of rebuttal.

But I do stick by my assertion that "someone" has his/her panties in a wad as far as Hall goes.
