Hallmark Channel's New Lineup Effective 01/04/2010

To me WGN America has become better in showing classic sitcoms than TV Land, especially on Sunday nights and weekday afternoons. I'd like to see more improvement during the week, but at least there are times during the day you can find classic sitcoms. I'd definitely like to see them pick up I Love Lucy, expecially with the sorry way Hallmark has carried it.

Hallmark claims each time slot they've show Lucy in the ratings have bombed. Maybe it's the fact that it's been on for so long. Maybe the show will get better ratings if it went off the air for 5 or 10 years and then come back.

Cheers is on WGN America also, at 5PM EST weekdays they show 2 episodes.

They sure do. In fact my parents sometimes watch that instead of their local news. And then they watch Ted Danson's other sitcom - Becker 6PM-7PM. They love that COX added WGN America a few months ago.

This is another bone I have to pick with DirecTV. To get WGN, I have step up to the next tier and pay for a bunch of junk I don't want. Besides the obvious reason ($$$), anybody know why DirecTV won't include WGN in the basic package?

It strikes me kind of funny, especially since on some cable systems, WGN America is part of the barebones basic cable package.

Does the Hallmark Channel still air its original movies? ??? I know they were good at doing that at one point...

Some of the movies they will be airing on the weekend (and Friday Nights at 9PM) will no-doubt be their own. Plus they have Hallmark Movie Channel. Some of their movies air there. They show a lot of movies I remember that were on Disney Channel back in the day.

In fact, the Hallmark Movie Channel shows lots of vintage Live Action Disney Movies (1950's-1970's). None of the animated movies though. They probably signed a deal with Disney?

I know. I'm a subscriber of the Comcast Monopoly, but not by choice. My neighborhood isn't wired for U-VERSE yet. (Of course as it stands know I wouldn't be able to switch because I don't have a job).

So anyway I like Becker and a few shows on Retro Night on Sundays on WGN America.

WGN America is on Central CA Comcast on Canal 23 on analog and is on the $12.00 lifeline economy package in Fresno/ Clovis/ Madera/ Visalia/Hanford /Tulare, I can't believe it's not avaliable in Stockton,but knowing Comcast it's possible.
It's even available on digital 74-5, when you connect your HDTV directly to the cable.
The $12 package on Comcast has the locals , TWC, ION and WGN, only 20 channels analog and most local subchannels on the Digital direct connection.

Comcast does very city by city, Stockton has KOFY, KRON, and KICU from the BayArea so I guess they figure theres enough IND stations, I was looking at the listings for Pleasanton/Livermore they have more than Stockton, Fresno, and most Valley cities The have WGN in HD and they have about 25 more HD channel than Fresno, plus All Bay Area stations some Sacramento/Stockton/Modesto stations.

Of the stations that you mentioned, only KOFY TV 20 is slightly worthwhile. They do have a Retro Night. The other two are alright.

IIRC, WGN wasn't originally on DirecTV the first 2-3 years of DirecTV's existance. I remember Dish Network and Primestar carrying it before DirecTV. When DirecTV added it, it got added to the higher end Total Choice package and not the Select Choice, the latter package which was ultimately phased out. Like most providers, new channels get added in the higher tier, as a way to increase revenues with the intention customer fork out more per month.

Lastly, Tribune (still in bankruptcy?) the channel owner never had the clout that bigger providers like Disney or Fox has, to force DirecTV to put the channel in the most available package. It's to DirecTV's interest that a channel remains in a higher tiered package.

I'd like WGN or Hallmark to pick up 'Wonder Years' and 'Mama's Family', both more recently seen on ion. Wonder Years isn't on DVD either. Hallmark is still a lot better than TV Land or ion. And WGN is even better (in showing classic sitcoms) than Hallmark.

Perhaps the deal with 'I Love Lucy' is its b&w. I don't mind it, but the current group of 15-25 years olds didn't see 'I Love Lucy' on local broadcast...instead they saw 'Maury', and the idea of a watching a b&w show on a channel may require too much thought. Three Stooges the exception.

NBC hasn't been involved with ION in at least 5 years. Whatever year they transitioned from PAX to "I" before becomign ION. Furthermore with what they're running now has increased its ratings and thus (in theory) can charge more for advertising.
