Halloween weekend = Pirate Radio Weekend

Halloween weekend is traditionally a busy time for shortwave pirate broadcasters. Look for activity on or around 6850-6950 khz this weekend, with most activity usually taking place around 6925 khz. Popular modes are AM, lower sideband and upper sideband. Reception is generally better in the eastern US, but reception from the west coast should also possible with a good antenna. I'm hearing a weak signal right now with music on 6924 khz AM mode as I write this.

Fire up your shortwave radios this weekend and report what you're hearing!

Have fun!

So far, I heard a weak signal at 6933 this evening, at 9, a couple of guys speaking in a foreign language, in USB mode.

Earlier I heard:

2245 UTC, 6899.6 khz AM - Voice of Next Thursday coming in poorly with music and what sounds like an assortment of odd data bursts at times.

2300 UTC, 6925 khz USB - Pumpkin Patch Radio coming in strong with Charlie Daniels music and IDs between songs.

I also heard WBNY on 6900 AM a little bit later along with those mystery Spanish talkers on 6933 USB...

Something going on at 6933 or 6934 USB.. I really don't care much for sideband operators playing music that is unknown;
you never can quite the sideband correctly for pitch if you don't know the music.

5:22 UTC
WWV SEEMED off air @ 5 Mhz, but there was some quieting....then I heard the end of a Sonny James record, a voice-tracked leader into something else.
This sounded like a feed from a local FM audio. Then SNAP! Right into the normal audio of WWV!
Sounds like the engineers at WWV were having some Halloween fun!
This was not someone overpowering WWV. It was music on WWV.

OK I don't know if this is better for Halloween or April Fools, or if it's even possible..... but how about maybe a few AM stations that have a large coverage radius (200+ miles groundwave or 800+ miles skywave, but I'm not only thinking of 1-A "clears") maybe temporarily swap the IBOC and normal audio transmit frequencies? :) Or at least swap one sideband of the main channel with the nearest IBOC.
Are there any other scary ideas?

Keep trying!

1745 UTC (1:45pm EST), 6924.9 khz AM - WMPR "Mirco Power Radio" playing electronic music, signal around S6 here and strong at times. They are transmitting SSTV images right now, so probably about to sign off...

EDIT: Yep - off the air at 1750 UTC

My last pirate post for anyone still trying to catch a pirate:

0020 UTC (8:23pm EST), 6950 USB - Wolverine Radio playing music and putting out a killer signal. Best sideband pirate I've probably ever heard - the audio is super clear and crisp and others are reporting reception from as far away as the west coast. Should be an easy catch for most!

Caught a "Geek-Inspired" thriller on 6930 USB around 0000 on 11-01 (Halloween night in the USA). Talk about "Morack", and some prisoner stuff. I tuned away for a moment and missed the ID at sign-off.

Around 0130 UT, heard the "Rocky Horror Picture Show" soundtrack on 6950.

Scariest part of the evening was listening to Evangelicals on 3215 and 5050, lifting NBC archive program audio to illustrate that "God Hates America". Something about the space shuttle disaster being because of Obama's health care plan.
Weird....they should have stuck to smashing pumpkins.

I just heard a very faint signal on 6973 in AM mode, sounded like elevator music and oldies rock. This happened after 10:30 PM EST. No announcements.

I had Israel on this frequency last night at this time playing pop music. Tonight, it's just a carrier but perhaps you're hearing the same station with more favorable propagation.

I know I'm bumping an old thread, but has anyone ever heard anything other than "normal" sounds from WWV or WWVH?

I still can't get over this....I'd think they'd test with a tone or a swept frequency.

it was foolish, not having the recorder on......

At 10 PM EST I am hearing blues music on 6924.9 or 6925 in USB and the signal is fairly strong here in VA, with an S9 reading on the Palstar R30A's meter. The antenna is a one-turn wire loop about 9 ft long. Perhaps the Thanksgiving weekend is also pirate radio weekend?

This is "Wolverine Radio" - ID just given @ 0312 UTC. Big S8 signal into Michigan, great audio for sideband, nice musical selection. Thanks for the tip! Yes, look for increased shortwave pirate activity during any big holiday weekend.
