Halloween

Seems early. But Serenade Radio (online only standards in England) is playing "Pumpkin Waltz" by Vince Guaraldi. It's from "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown".

Is Halloween even the money-making, tooth-rotting monstrosity in England that it is in the United States? Maybe the Guaraldi instrumental is just another song in Serenade's playlist. I hear used to hear it year-round on WJMJ Hartford, CT.

The English are known for not having good teeth, so maybe.

The DJ seemed to be playing all or mostly Autumn records.

I have collection of Halloween music, comedy, and audio clips that I have on my flash drive and it includes a couple of Dr. Demento shows that I'm playing in my car. I also have a similar collection for Thanksgiving and the hugest one of all for Christmas. 😁

Time to dust off the Monster Mash and spin it!
Serenade Radio played it, but it was the Vincent Price version. This followed Price reading something scary.

There were numerous readings, not all of them scary. One was by Boris Karloff, and this was followed by a spoken word version of "It Was a Very Good Year" with an orchestra. This was from a Jonathan Winters special and Karloff ended by saying something about how good his life was (or whoever is having the experiences in the song).

Lots of songs about either Halloween or Halloween related topics, but not songs I had ever heard and I doubt there would be a point in listing those here.

But I did hear these songs.

"That Old Black Magic" Louis Prima and Keely Smith

"The Thing" Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire (not a scary creature, but the DJ, who also runs the station, said whenever he heard it he thought of the Addams Family character).

"Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered" Dorothy Squires

Someone requested "Zombie Jamboree" by Harry Belafonte this morning on KCJJ and they actually played it, it's a good song I'd never heard before:
Steve also played "Haunted House" by Jumpin' Gene Simmons and "Witch Doctor" by David Seville. He might have played other ones, but I didn't start listening til 8.

I've never heard it on any station, but Andrew Gold, Linda Ronstadt and Stephen Bishop did a great version of Monster Mash, too.

These songs except for Monster Mash are too tame for Halloween.

'Every Day Is Halloween' by Ministry....now that's a Halloween song!

I'm playing it lowkey this year. Two Halloween-connectable songs per hour, 7:00pm to midnight: Thriller, Somebody's Watching Me, Ghostbusters, Psycho Killer, Dead Man's Party, The Killing Moon, Abracadabra, etc.

Next year, Halloween is on Friday, so Freddy S. and I are planning something more substantial by way of the Flashback Weekend program.

KITS/Live 105 is redubbing itself “Evil 105” tonight from 7-10 pm with horror-themed tunes of the alternative variety. You can look up the playlist from Audacy’s Live 105 webpage - for example, Talking Heads’ “Psycho Killer” is playing as I type this, but you won’t hear the legal ID: “KITS San Francisco-Transylvania-Oakland-San Jose”.

Ah, now, they’re playing the thing I hoped they would do: Bauhaus’ “Bela Lugosi’s Dead”. Peter Murphy’s lugubrious voice is perfect for the occasion. And it’s probably the only time you’ll hear it on commercial radio this year.

It’s clever and fun; kudos to Live 105 for this one.

Ministry had two songs in the movie "The Hurt Locker" which was on a local TV station several weeks ago. This is the sort of thing one would expect with macho soldiers.

Serenade Radio, is, after all, easy listening.

Speaking of which, "Old Devil Moon" by Tony Bennett is playing now, and should have been part of yesterday's show.

Edit: And now it's "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered" by Dorothy Squires. Oh, wait, that was played yesterday.

Too bad Thanksgiving isn't worthy of having holiday songs. The only one that I know of is George Winston's 'Thanksgiving'.

I'm sure Ministry didn't record one!

I've been listening to The Haunt stunt in Milwaukee. Kinda blah and limited for the most part (Zombie by the Cranberries comes up A LOT). But they had fun with a few other tracks. Obviously Bauhaus and the Talking Heads, but also "Scary Monsters" by David Bowie, "Dragula" by Rob Zombie, to name a few. For whatever inexplicable reason, no Everyday Is Halloween by Ministry (unless I missed it). The rest is pretty predictable - Ghostbusters, Werewolves of London, Black Parade, etc.

To Kilowattcat: Most of the usual suspects, including Rob Zombie. I played several songs by John Zacherly as well. Some that I wanted to play l, but didn’t have, were aired by a nephew on his online station.
