Ham Radio Question

The rules have changed so much so I thought I'd bring this to the experts! You are a licensed ham operator and actually the control operator at the radio. Can you have a family member operate your station while you are there? If so, how would they give the call sign? For example, suppose the callsign is W6xxx. Your wife Mary wants to call CQ. Can she do this? I think it used to be she would give the callsign as "W6xxx slash Mary" using one of the voice modes. If this is allowed, where would I find this in the regulations?

47CFR97.7 (Control Operation Requried) states:

When transmitting, each amateur station must have a control operator. The control operator must be a person:

(a) For whom an amateur operator/primary station license grant appears on the ULS consolidated licensee database, or

(b) Who is authorized for alien reciprocal operation by §97.107 of this part


47CFR97.115b (Third Party Traffic) states:

The third party may participate in stating the message where:

(1) The control operator is present at the control point and is continuously monitoring and supervising the third party's participation; and

(2) The third party is not a prior amateur service licensee whose license was revoked or not renewed after hearing and re-licensing has not taken place; suspended for less than the balance of the license term and the suspension is still in effect; suspended for the balance of the license term and re-licensing has not taken place; or surrendered for cancellation following notice of revocation, suspension or monetary forfeiture proceedings. The third party may not be the subject of a cease and desist order which relates to amateur service operation and which is still in effect.


The third party may ID the station, but the licensee must be physically present and must be able to shut off the transmitter if necessary.

Another way the ID could be done would be, For example, if my wife, a General, were to be operating my station, An Extra, either her own call in the General parts of the band or my WB0KSW call would be all she needed, however if she went into the Extra or Advanced part of the band with me present, she could identify as KA7QEH/WB0KSW or in voice as KA7QEH operating WB0KSW. Her call would not technically be necessary, but she might want to get it out there. In the General parts of the bands, since her station and mine are the same, her call if by herself or either call if I was present are fine.

I agree with the last post: As long as the licensee is present and serves as control operator or supervising the communications. Third party may operate as long as he/she is operating within their license privileges.
