HAMMER FALLS HARD ON FOX 11 AND KTTU

Belo Broadcasting which owns KMSB FOX 11 and KTTU MNT 18 announced a Shared Services Agreement this morning with Raycom's KOLD CBS 13. What this means is that the entire staff of KMSB and KTTU will no longer be employed by Feb. 1, 2012. Belo will have a small sales staff at the KOLD studios for the two stations, and KOLD NEWS 13 will appear on FOX 11 more than likely in the 7-9 am and 9-10 pm slot daily when the SSA goes into effect early next year. SSA's are common when stations are failing to cover their overhead costs and allow multiple stations to share resources while maintaining separate ownerships. Belo Broadcasting is based out of Dallas, owner of the Dallas Morning News, and numerous TV stations, including KTVK 3 and KASW 61 in Phoenix.

Wow! Hard to believe as stories of Fox successes in TV dreck are somewhat numerous.

Tucson is a tough place to make a living though from a local sales perspective. Economy in the tank, no consumer-type companies of any note there beyond the car dealers. The two largest employers, Davis-Monthan AFB and the University of Arizona don't advertise much.

Don't they just simulcast GMAZ from 3TV in Phoenix? Why use their Tucson competitor when they could use 3TV/CW6 facilities in Phx?

What happened to the Four Hour Morning News Show - They didn't give it a chance! Sorry to hear the news Ken Carr! Wondering how much they would lease the studios out for?

Several questions were posed above. Why not use KTVK resources out of Phoenix? They already did, and GMAZ never posted great ratings in Tucson. They used KTVK personalities when they first started FOX NEWS AT NINE, and then they went with local Tucson personnel. This is just a money saving measure. Belo will still be in charge of programming both stations, which they can do from either Phoenix or their Dallas headquarters, and local news will be provided by KOLD and its news staff, from 7-9 am and 9-10 pm daily. This will allow Tucsonans to enjoy local news coverage, and four hours of morning local news. Viewers can catch the 5-7 am on CBS 13 and then flip to FOX 11 for 7-9 am.

Belo does a similar thing here in Seattle, KING NBC 5 airs KING MORNING NEWS from 4:30-7 am and then their independent station KONG 16 airs KING MORNING NEWS from 7-9 am, giving viewers a 4 1/2 hour morning news block that is local.

The three stations will use one master control at KOLD studios for the three stations feeds. Belo will only have a handful of sales people and can save on paying salaries for 15-20 personnel that will no longer work at Channels 11 & 18.
