Hamp Swain to be honored

Macon radio legend Hamp Swain (King Bee, The King, Deacon Swain) is being inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame on September 20.
A pioneer in Macon radio, Swain played a major part in launching the careers of Little Richard, James Brown and Otis Redding. Because many of Hamp's fans, friends, listeners, former co-workers and competitors would like to share in this honor, but won't be able to attend the ceremony in Atlanta we're doing something local. Hamp was famous for his record hops in the 50's and 60's, so we're dusting off all the old r & b and soul music and having "Hamp's Hop." This will be Friday, September 12 at the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in Macon. Admission is $5 for non members of the GMHF and free for members. Proceeds will go to the hall of fame's MIKE (Music in Kids Education) program. We'd like to find as many old Macon radio personalities to help out (even if it's just intro-ing a record or two). Those committed so far are Satellite Papa, The Mighty Rock,
Laughing Lafayette Haines, The Queen Bee, The Honey Bee, Bill Elder, Gary Guntor, Paul Beliveau, Charles Richardson, Ron Wildman and yours truly. Still waiting to hear from Big George, Big Saul, KIng Juan, Don King and Terry Taylor. Anyone know how to get in touch with Jolly Joe Mason? Also if there's anybody we're missing from the golden days of WIBB, WNEX, WBML, WMAZ, please have them contact me at 478-474-4366, or [email protected] This is going to be the biggest Macon radio reunion ever, and a great way to share in Hamp's well-deserved honor.
