Hampton Roads gets hit with a "Kungpao!"

I’m not sure of all the details (I read it on another board), but from what I’ve heard: Max Media owned WXMM (100.5 Hampton Roads, VA) has dropped rock as “Max” for… ya sittin’ down? Classic Chinese Hits! As “Kungpao 100.5.”

You may be saying: “It’s just a stunt.” Really? Okay. Look at their website: www.kungpao1005.com. Pay special attention to the message from the GM, and the accompanying comments, then come back and tell me they’re stunting.

Personally, I love, love, love the station.

I personally liked the Rock format on 100.5. I wonder how Kungpao 100.5 will do in this market. I took it off my dial though. I think this was a bad move by Max Media. Oh Well there is still FM99 and 96X.

I bet you the shoes on my feet its a STUNT!!!! The stunt alarm is blaring!

according to VARTV, the RDS Data is showing 100.5 as classic rock "Beer 100.5" or some such nonsense.

Anyway, goodbye MAX FM. I personally felt that station was in "crisis mode" for a couple of years. There's only so much rock pie to divvy up.

I predict a stab at top 40.

Radio-X

This is clearly a stunt. I have never heard in my life a "Classic Chinese Hits" station. Not just Chinese, but CLASSIC Chinese Hits. I think they are just trying to get our attention (since Max FM had about a 1.6 ratings share in our area, even though its a 50kw station).

On the contest page they have this as one of the contests:

"Take your bills and divide them among the community!"
"Take Your Bills And Divide Them Among The Community" begins with The Wake-Up Gang Of Four on Monday April 27. Send us your paycheck and listen for your name to get some of it back."

Under the "Insurgent Club" they have a page for signing up.
The form includes: "Name, Address, E-Mail, Party Affiliation, Family Members In Strategic Positions In The U.S. Military Industrial Complex (please separate with a comma):, Kidney or Renal Disorder" and Please detail the activities of your neighbors. Leave nothing out. We will know if you do:"

Soooo fake.

The RDS on my radio says "100.5 Beer FM. Classic Rock that Really Rocks." Now, This Monday I believe ManCow (was on 96x) will be back. He has to go to some where

Clearly they are just trying to make some noise and get attention, so they can then switch to their new format Classic Rock (eh the fox modified itself to Classic Hits so why not).

when I get down to VA beach I am always excited just to listen to the radio down there. NYC rock sucks. I am glad I have a blackberry now. I can listen to WCCC from here in the NYC tri-state.
I hope Max-FM will be back

This cannot be for real ???? But from VARTV.com it is there. But a stunt for Mancow is likely....or drop Classic Chinese and leave HITS for a CHR on Monday.

But if it is for real, is there enough Chinese for this to work?

OK. You’re on! I truly believe that this is the real thing. But, we’ll see. Let’s give this thing, ‘till, say, the 4th of May just to be safe. You never know how long Max Media will wait to debut something new here. Maybe they want to wait ‘till the first of the month. So, radiodxrichmond, WXMM will flip by at least the first Monday in May (the fourth.) If that doesn’t happen, you may wish to prepare to part with your shoes. LOL!

You really are a kid? you read the station manager's comments and thought they were real? You're stunting right?

I give them points for creativity on the stunting, which I too think it is.
Hopefully they put that much effort into the format.

I predict CHR. BIG hole for it! Z104 finishes near the top book after book. "The Zone" did decent on a signal nobody heard. On a big signal, they could easily pull 4 shares. Straight up mainstream, grabs some from Z104 and from The Point.
"HOT 100.5"??
They have "HOT 107.1" in Denver

The format that worked at 100.5 for 40 years was country, as WCMS. Too bad to see this now become the frequency that can't figure out what to do next.

How about a morning show to honor their heritage and new format? The "Hop & Hoppel Morning Wok 'n' Country Show" with Hop Sing (from the Cartwright ranch) & 40 year WCMS morning man Joe Hoppel? (LOL)

They f'ed up by leaving the Beer on. Major temper tantrums over at Max that that got leaked. It's Rock. PD is already in town. Morning show from Tampa. Night show from Grand Rapids.

You’re full of crap! “Kungpao” it is, and “Kungpao” it will stay.

I’m going to be frank, honest, but respectful in what I’m about to say.

Everyone here thinks this is a stunt. However, there is no evidence to support that. Oh, the “Beer” display? That’s there to make us radio people talk. That will go away on Monday. I believe that “Kungpao” is the real thing. The message from the GM, and the listener comments on the website say it all.

I understand why many of you think this format is a stunt. We’ve all been brainwashed or conditioned to believe that radio stations must take on a bland format like Classic Rock or top 40. We are taught that nitch formats don’t sell at all. Therefore, it is only natural for all of you to think it’s a stunt – most radio stations don’t do formats like this longterm. However, I respectfully ask, am I the only one on this board with an imagination? Has radio gotten so bad that, if it’s not drab, it’s not for real? Am I the only one left who believes that nitch formats like Classic Chinese Hits can work on the radio? (Hello? Hello? Anyone home?)

I again ask you to look at the statement from the GM of Max Media, and then at the comments that appear on the site. Where did those comments come from, ya think. Thin air? No. They came from actual “Kungpao” listeners – listeners who want something fresh and new on the radio.

Look, “Kungpao” will never really gain advertising success. And, it will never be number one in the ratings, for sure. But I think we need to start thinking outside the box here. Is it wrong to believe that maybe, just maybe, Max Media is doing this for the listeners, and not for what is in the bottom line for them? Is it really that ridiculous to believe that Max Media has done their research, and will actually try something new – something that the people want, rather than what fits their wallets? Is it criminal to believe that radio can deliver fun, new formats again, and that Max Media could start a trend here with their new Chinese “Kungpao” format?

I respect your opinions. However, while the rest of you try to predict the next bland, robotic format to appear at 100.5, I for one will be listening to “Kungpao 100.5,” and holding on to the hope that Max Media will begin a new revolution of exciting new formats on the radio dial.

Nice long response. The issue with these out there formats is that advertisers won't support them. Radio stations play a format that people want to hear, advertisers give money to these stations to play their commercials. The 'better' the station the more money they get. How can this station stay afloat without money? I will say, its kinda cool. Its great music to do homework by or to fall asleep to (similar to say WHRO/Classical).

It just seems like a stunt (they fixed the RDS display. It now has the Classic Chinese hits on it). They aren't playing just Asian music, but "Classic Chinese Hits" "Not Kung Wow, Kung Pao!" It all just seems like a joke. The GM note on the main page just sounds made up. I mean, I like this music, but there is no way that thousands of people have requested this. As for the user comments, they are generic. And if you read them, they are the same (ie the same 20 or so comments).

Its got to be a stunt. If not, then the station is doing a "I'll play what I want and I don't give a ****". Which is kinda cool actually lol

Yes.

Los Angeles? Maybe. There's no audience for it in Norfolk. Definitely a stunt.

And yes, the comments came out of thin air. Watch:

"Trip's posts are the best and most knowledgeable posts I've ever read on any message board!" -- Sally in Suffolk

"When you want to know anything about broadcasting, Rabbit Ears is definitely the place to go. Trip knows his stuff and shares it with the world--without ads! He's the best!" -- Tom in Staunton

There is no Sally, and no Tom.

HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAAHAHA!!
I LIVE IN LA AND I CAN'T BELIEVE WHEN I CAME UPON THIS STATION! HAHAHA
it think it is FOR SURE a stunt although what Radio Kid said was very true. WHAT HAPPENED TO RADIO GETTING CREATIVE?!?!?!
But my favorite thing about the station is the imaging:
"KUNG PAO 100.5 FM, WHERE ALL THE MUSIC ENDS WITH A HAPPY ENDING"
nice job. HAHAHAHAHA

This is the best stunting I've heard!! Extremely creative!

If another station stunts as a Chinese CHR/Top-40, let me know. The 'Top 10' on their website is the real thing in Hong Kong.

This stunt opens a few doors in the future. An all-Jap-Anime station might work for real in the U.S... :D

Oh, and "Chinese Classic Hits" isn't really this traditional stuff. The Chinese hits from the 70's, 80's, & 90's are REALLY by artists like Sam Hui, Alan Tam, Anita Mui, & George Lam. Stuff my parents listen to...

Words of wisdom from a Chinese dude in radio who gets all your American humor about our culture. Hardy har. :D
